Title: Innocence Post by: donb2222 on March 09, 2002, 05:00:00 AM Tonight Vilma and I were talking about her neighbors in her village in the Philippines.
Vilma was telling me that she had several neighbors that spent a great deal of time teaching animals to talk. Apparently you teach dogs and cats to talk the same way that you would teach a baby to talk. You practice with them every day, and it is best to start when they are very young. Of course, you begin with the simple words, and work your way to the more difficult ones. Sometimes the neighbors would shout at the animals because they were not making any progress. Many times it would be a group effort, and many of the neighbors would work with one dog or cat. Every day they would see animals on television talking, and therefore it just had to be possible.... There are still many parts of the world that have never heard of special effects, or computer animation. If they see it on television or the movies, it just has to be true. Of course Vilma understands that the talking animals in the movie "Cats and Dogs" are not real. I'm not posting this to embarass Vilma, or any other person. The reason that I am posting this is to try to explain to the newbies that it is a very, very different world out there. Many things that we take for granted is not known or understood in the rest of the world. So, for the newbies, when you think you know everything there is to know about your penpal, please stop and consider that Have Fun, Don P.S. Just try talking to your penpal about vampires, witches, and other superstitions, it will be a very interesting conversation. That was a funny post about animals talking. Not quite as funny, but my wife was shocked when I explained to her that WWF was fake!! Not that she's a big fan but I she still seemed disappointed. How about those asian infomercials over there? My gosh, they are so funny! My favorite is the patch you tape to the back of your neck that stimulates your pituitary gland and makes you grow 2 cm. in two weeks!! LOL Title: HAHA... I freakin loved watched TV over there...all those wacked commercials, especially the phone card one with the girl screaming "Mommy" into the phone, and then falling down the stairs, haha...Then all those shampoo ones for black hair. I'll say one things for Filipinas, they are very meticulous about their looks and hygiene and beauty products. Here we were at the beach in San Fabian, Lingayen Gulf, in the sun and sand and really having a ball in the hut we had rented, a beat up old jeepney our only transport, and the girls all go to an old pump, and break out the top of the line clairol hair conditioner and do each others hair real well. The salt in the ocean plays hell with that lovely hair and they just can't wait to go home and wash it out. I don't know it just struck me as very funny, because taking a shower then, at that beautiful beach, was the last thing on my mind, Just some thoughts, Title: TV-Media Post by: Bear on March 09, 2002, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Innocence, posted by donb2222 on Mar 9, 2002
It never fails to amaze me at how innocently people believe all the "bull" they see/hear of TV. Honey is always asking me if something she sees on TV is true (like "Does Mr. Ed really talk?"). I tell her is its on TV its recreation, make believe and lies. Yet whenever I tried to warn people that what their wives and children are watching on TV might be negatively influencing them on an issue I always hear "I'm" weird and radical. Kill the messenger. See ya next week. Bear Title: Re: Innocence Post by: madmal on March 09, 2002, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to Innocence, posted by donb2222 on Mar 9, 2002
Hi Don, It is coincidental that you should bring this up, as last night Doan and I were talking about much the same things.(ie superstitions) She is due to have our first baby in May. In Vietnam this would usually occur at home, unless something went wrong. But here it will be in a hospital. Doan is not at all keen on that idea. She says she will only stay there if I do as well. Her reason....? She doesn't want to sleep alone in a place where so many people have died. It scares her incredibly. You should hear all the superstitions to do with what you can and can't eat in pregnancy and after the baby is born. mal |
