Title: That 'clever' thing Post by: juio99 on October 21, 2002, 04:00:00 AM We all know that these ladies are looking for 'clever' guys. I discussed this at length with one lady in particular while I was in SPb. I told her that 'clever' probably wasn't the best word to be using and suggested to her 'intelligent.'
She told me that when 'intelligent' is translated to Russian, the word actually covers 3 aspects. So to them, an intelligent person is 1) Clever, 2) Educated, and 3) Cultured. Further, she said the ladies look first for 'clever' because they figure such a guy could (if not already) become educated and cultured. Just FYI JR Title: Re: That 'clever' thing Post by: don1 on October 21, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to That 'clever' thing, posted by juio99 on Oct 21, 2002
That's partially true ; when you see the word 'clever' in an agency profile or in a woman's correspondence , the English equivalent is 'smart' or 'reasonably intelligent' . Russians use the word 'intelligent' to describe someone who is well-mannered, decent, considerate ; as well as being 'smart'...Their word 'intelligent' not only describes a person as being well-educated , but describes their character as well...
