Just a question.

My wife and I are having our AOS interview on Tuesday and she was wanting to know a little more about other peoples experience with the AOS interview.

Do they allow us to be together during the interview or are we kept separate?

Do they ask some silly questions about what we had for dinner the previous night?

Any other recent information would be helpful.

Our interviewer was Chinese in origin, and quite pleasant, but hard to understand for the both of us. Asked the normal type stuff, liked all the answers and photos we brought. It was over in 15 minutes, but he wanted the adit photos -- he took the ones from the application, but those were later rejected due to the background wasn't 'white' enough (darkened from 'age' I guess). Sending new ones delayed the green card by just a couple of weeks, but no problems.

Our interview was pretty simple, took 15 minutes.  We were together, including our nine year old son.  We had more evidence with us than we were asked for.  If I recall correctly, he asked for the joint bank statements, and a bill or two which indicated that we did reside at the same address.  He also copied a life insurance document that showed my wife and son as beneficiary.  We were asked a couple very simple questions, and the interviewer playfully teased our son about his "spiderman" shirt.  We had pictures with us, but were not asked to show them.  As said earlier, every interviewer is different.  Best of luck!

You are allowed to stay together.  Most interviews are fairly perfunctory - I think the key is to look like you are happy together and have all your documents in order.  However, in a few cases it can be quite a grilling, as it was in our case, as each interviewer is different.  We had someone who didn't believe in international marriages, and worked us over about our relationship for about a half hour - how did we meet, where have we gone together, did we get married in church, diagram of home.  By the end it was a positive experience as she realized we really loved each other and we had all the documents:  1)  joint bank account, 2) pictures of wedding and other pictures together on different occasions, 3) both parties on deed to property or lease, 4) health insurance cards and 5) other joint purchases and anything else they say you must bring.  You probably don't need all of this in 95% of the cases, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Whoa, back up there, Chuck!  What is "both parties on deed to property or lease" all about?  Is this mandatory?  i.e., I now own my house free & clear.  If I get married to a RW, or any woman for that matter, the house will stay in my name and I will have a prenup executed -- is that a potential problem for the AOS interview?

Usually they're looking for evidence that you are living together, and, while a joint deed is not required, it is evidence that you are living together.  There are other ways to prove that, and I am sorry if I suggested you needed a joint deed.  You are correct.

I'm trying to think if my first wife (an AW) and I could have passed an AOS interview!

I mean, we could have answered the question... but if we had to show that we were happy together...? Might have been close!

Every interviewer is different. Every interview is unique.
