I don't watch TV - I like to watch movies on VHS or DVD but I don't watch any sort of broadcast TV.  In fact, I have only watched maybe 5 hours in the last 2 years (at relative's houses).  And I don't have cable (and the satellite system that came with the house is not activated).  So I presume I should either get an antenna or activate the satellite system before my fiancee gets here.  Or should I?  Will she be very interested in watching TV in English?  Do Russians watch much TV?  What about you married guys - do your wives watch it much?  I've watched TV in foreign countries before and it wasn't the least bit interesting.  But then again, I don't think television in English in very interesting either.

I suppose I will have to go and find out what to do to get a card for the C band system I have (it's hooked up and works, there's just no channels paid for on it).  I wouldn't mind having the History Channel....

Almost forgot,...MOVIES!

For the first year my bride was here, every weekend I would take her to a movie. She loved it! (I kind of liked it too)

I might suggest you try that and see how she like it. If she does, take her often.

Funny you should ask!  I have no first hand experience re: your quandry but let me share something related with your question.

I flew from Oregon to Moscow last December on a trip to spend three weeks (the holiday season) with a lady in Volgograd.  Once we got airborne from JFK I started to observe the other passengers.  It quickly became appearant that about 75% of them were Russians going home for the holiday season.  I sat beside a yound lady who was about 35 yrs. old and we struck up a conversation.  She said she was married to an Amercan man and she spoke with no appearant Russian accent.  She said she had been living in the US for 5 years and her husband would not travel to Russia in the winter season - thus she was flying solo.  (After my trip I completely understood her husband's attitude!)  (i.e., I froze my M_____ing lilly white Oregonian Ass off!)  Any way, because she spoke what I considered to be ordinary English, I asked her where she learned to speak so good after only 5 years -- specifically, I asked about "English as a Second Language programs".  She shook her head, "nyet", in a disdainful manner and said "American TV."  Go figure.

Just based on that, I would suggest signing up for cable, but not necessarily Russian channels, and giving her the clicker (remote) (freedom) to just veg out for a few months.  It appears to me that English is a lot easier to pick up on than Russian.  Most RW are educated and mentally bright - this seems to be a very good way to pick up our language - but be aware of the programed crapola of American TV... it's not exactly reality........

Bob

I guess it makes sense for her to learn English from TV.  Still, it's a scary thought....

She'll learn useful phrases like:

"Uh huh... you GO girlfriend..."

and "Talk to the hand..."

And, of course, "... Attention K-Mart Shoppers..."

Scary indeed!

Old,
I would suggest you do not get Russian TV until after a year or so.  TV is a good learning tool for your finacee.  They certainly do not use big words and it will help her develope her English.  Cable is better than public broadcasting, in my opinion, because of the more intersting selection of channels.  Look for an International channel as they have a Russian news report.  That will keep her informed but the rest of the time she will be forced to try and understand English.

Well, I can't get cable out where I live.  And I'm a little hesitant to put up an antenna because I doubt it will do any good (I'm just over the rise of a hill and I think it pretty effectively blocks radio and tv reception).  Guess that's why the house came with a satellite system?  I would expect the Russian news is available on satellite.  I'' have to check into it.  Thanks for the advice.

oldbutspry, the TV will be a great training tool for your new bride as it will help to improve her English and teach her a lot of our slang. If you don't have it now, get a TV that will allow you to have the sub-titles so she will be able to read along to what is being said.

Todays cable and dish TV options allow for Russian TV programs. In addition there are many channels that interest a great many Russian ladies (including the History Channel).

Get a VCR and or disc player for your TV so she can rent and watch movies and tapes from home.

My wife went to the local library the other day and rented a Russian movie that was made in Moscow in about 1958. She had not seen this movie for years and was quite surprised to find it in a library in Tejas.

I guess I'll have to break down and get the satellite system working.  The sub-title idea makes sense but I hate to buy another TV.  I have a multi-system projection TV that doesn't do sub-titles.  (The nice thing is that if I pick up a Russian PAL VCR I will be set to watch tapes from Russia.)   If I was to buy another TV it would probably be a 25" or so.  But I wonder if she would actually rather watch that small of a tv.  I'll think about it.  Of course, I can show sub-titles on DVD's right now so I'm part way there.

yo can never tell who are the good guys and bad guys. And then sometimes the good and bad team up only to get into a brawl again.........Patrick, we should have a Best Of Planet Love and put it into hard copy-maybe a play-one act of course. With all of the odd names and characters it would be like a strange DC Comics goes Broadway. LP could be Spiderpants or Wonderboy in his invisible paper airplane or something. :)
Just think I get paid for this.......

The audience for professional wrestling is a little to sophisticated but what if we went head to head with Jerry Springer?  Call the network!  I smell MONEY!!!!
