Title: another calling Kiev question
Post by: Gman on September 23, 2002, 04:00:00 AM
Does anyone know of a long distance service that provides sound quality comparable to what you can get in the states.  Price would need to be reasonable.  I used a "call Kiev card" from nobelcom, 11 cents a minute, billed by the second, and it didn't overcharge me (on time) but I could barely hear my gal.  She said she was practically yelling.  There was no static it just sounded muffled?
Is this what I'm stuck with (poor phone lines in Kiev) or is there something better?

thanks in advance,
Gman

I use a calling card from leancard.com and it is called the bargain card and it gets me $5 for 40 mins and it is quite clear.

My Ukr wife and I call daily into Ukr and are always looking for the best/cheapest way to do this. I constantly scour search engines for best card rates, which change daily, it seems. Yesterday we bought a card for 11.5 cents per min. with no other fees. Our fallback is to 1010555 which is expensive at .25 cents per minute but consistently reliable, dependable.
BTW, we've used dozens of different calling cards and their conversation quality is always the same--normal international (for Ukr) expectation.

I use WDT.  Not a phone card, no monthly fees, they send a seperate bill.  I have found them very reliable at 19 cents a minute.  But that is to Dnepropetrovsk, Kiev is cheaper.
I pretty much gave up on phone cards the quality was so lousy, at least to Dnepropetrovsk..

Their phone number is 1-888-353-0808

I've found that it's worth changing the times when you call, also I've noticed that once a card becomes more popular/older then it also becomes more difficult to use.

Try looking for newer brands and check for newer access numbers on the older brands. It's also an idea to keep several different cards handy. When it's really bad I just opt for BTs 34 pence per minute but keep the call short.

Save the used cards, you may have reason to need them.

I can not speak directly concerning calls to Kiev, but it has been my experience that sound quality varies greatly at times from card to card.  I have often found the cardds with the cheapest rates are often unusable due to poor sound quality and lost connections.  I am currently using a Blackstone #1 calling card to call Eastern Siberia and it is working quite well.
