Title: I have some news
Post by: Pordzhik on September 02, 2002, 04:00:00 AM
for some of you guys seeking a wife in FSU.

Although I missed all the slagging going on last night (remember my clocks are on british summer time GMT+1 hour) I've caught up with it this afternoon.

How will you feel after your RW wife is in the USA with you and you discover she is a racist? PC hasn't reached Russia yet, and I was forever hearing racist remarks about Georgians, Chechens and almost everyone else for that matter.

Will any of you be able to continue living with her? Or will you show some tolerance for her mis-guided and un-enlightened condition? and help her on her way to enlightenment? Show the way by example.

And who was it who recently advised one of the posters to stay away from muslim women in Kazakstan?

I too have heard the occasional negative commentary towards Yevre (Jews), Grudzinski (Georgians), and a few others.

In fact, it has been kind of fun being witness to the transformation. Olya was none too keen about Asians originally - until she attended English school here in the Denver area and the vast majority of her fellow classmates were from Asia.

The difference is (as you said), she was simply uninformed and un-enlightened. Once she has had exposure to these folks, her modest amounts of bigotry were shed rather quickly.

She is now friends with peoples of different races/religions that she would not have socialized with in Ukraine (including Muslim and Jewish friends of mine) - and she readily admits her previous narrow view was wrong.

Dan, for the most part you are right ie. nothing is inherently a problem with other groups in the US with the exception of Arabs. Why?  When you have a group of people in America who have been persistently caught red-handed plotting or committing numerous unthinkable acts, been using good Americans to fund terrorism which targets well intentioned Americans, been burning American flags and dancing in the streets of their communities when the World Trade Center and Pentagon was hit - you have no ordinary community.  These are people where the good example is an exception. What you have is a cancer which must be treated.  How do you treat it?  You cut the cancer out (ship the bad ones back, imprison or execute them), give chemotherapy to the rest ie. treat them all with intensive education so it does not happen again and survey the body for re-emergence of the disease (ever vigiliant police surveilance).  That is the real world we all must face or there will be many other days we will commiserate besides September 11.

I have to admit to a certain degree of cultural bigotry. I don't think it is racially motivated, as one of my best friends is from Uganda. James Muwanga is one of the finest men I have ever met. When his wife preceded him back to Uganda with his 3 children, to teach at the University in Kampala, I once joked with him that we should go out and pick up some chicks!! He said, "Oh no Steve, I can not do this, I love my wife. He was just a good person. You find them in every race. About 90% of the crimes in Utah, are committed by those of Hispanic origin. The Sheriff of Adams County was fired for saying as much, for showing bigotry in his comments. But facts are facts. So it leads many to show a certain amount of reservation toward Hispanics here. Familiarity with individuals dissipates these feelings toward the individual. But I have them.

I have a very good friend here in Logan, who is a businessman. He is a Pashtun from Kabul, Afganistan. He was very embarrassed by the 9-11 incident, and subsequent behavior in Afghanistan. He left Afghanistan because he saw no hope for peace. He is very acclimated to American life and values. Every Thanksgiving her serves about 400 free meals to the "needy", or to anyone who has no family or place to go. He is active in the community, and I know of no one that has a negative word or impression of him.

He is Muslim

Steve

There's no Adams County in Utah, How can a sheriff get fired? 90% of the crimes commited in Utah by Hispanics, prove it.

You are absolutely right! There is no Adams County. It was Salt Lake County not Adams. I don't know how I thought SLC was in Adams county. I screwed up. I live in Logan, and didn't know any better. I will not trouble myself to prove it. You know the sherrif that was fired and got the heat from the news channels and SL Tribune. Are you a native? Hispanic? It is a simple fact about the county. It is also a fact in Cache County. I can not go back into the archives to appease you. If you don't think it is true, then you prove it. I have no sense of guilt about my statement, only my mistaken county.

Sheriff Kinard has been the elected sheriff of Salt Lake County for the past 12 years, I am a lifer of the State of Utah and I have worked for the Courts for the past 18 years.  I know of no sheriff in this state that has ever been removed from office for making a statement such as the one you've mentioned.  I am not Hispanic, but I am viewed as a minority in this state, and one thing I hate is bigotry; again, prove that 90%.

It would be interesting to know how being in a minority affects anyones search in FSU? What of these girls attitudes towards this? Has anyone (of the minority races) got comments on diffrencies between city/rural girls and between the diffrent countries? and the degree of their racism. Also how do they compare with US girls attitudes on this?

I remember my wife telling me about the early part of her search when she was emailing with a young man from Detroit and how she was very taken with his style of writing, but due to some problems with opening a jpg, it was something like the fourth email when she and her mother (who was following the search with some interest)discovered that he was black. Mum became very upset with this turn of events and they re-wrote her profile. Seems they hadn't even considered that a black man would write.

"These are people where the good example is an exception"

I just don't buy it - and I doubt you can find anything other than hate-talk to support that comment.

Sure, you can find the spurious and occasional incident in which an Arab or a Muslim was responsible for a violent act - but to brand an entire religion (or race) as being in collusion to support acts of terror - at least, this particular religion or race - is irresponsible, unfounded, and wrong.

The other problem with your argument is that it's been made before. It hasn't been all that long ago that our politicians branded Native Americans as underlings - not worthy of the same consideration given to WASPs. And even less time has elapsed since the days of racial prejudice towards Americans of African descent. And are we able to forget the effects of bigotry aimed at the Jewish communities of Europe - or the "ethnic cleansing" in Bosnia.

What does it take to get people to recognize this is NOT about being 'Politically-correct'?!? It is about the simple recognition that we are all in the world together - and when people of different races, cultures, religions meet - they have abiding and striking similarities. We are, after all, of the same race - and almost universally, we share the wish to create a better world for our children to live and thrive.

It's considerably easier to sit on the sidelines and claim PC'ness - than it is do actually intermingle with people and do your part to work towards that common vision.

Does that make me (in MarkinTx's words) a "liberal weenie" - well, since I don't really know what a "liberal weenie" is - I am not sure, but if the aforementioned position makes me one - I guess I am.

I remember as a child seeing an episode of Star Treck. There was this guy who was white on one side of his body with a clear line of dramatic change in the mid line of his body where he now was totally black on the other side. There was no transition at all - quite striking.

He was chasing someone, obviously full of anger and hate, who looked just like him around the Galaxy. It was never really clear as to why this was happening.

When James T. Kirk asked him why he hated this other guy so much, the guy looked at him dumbfounded, in disbelief as he asked Kirk if he could not see the difference between him and this man that he was chasing.

Captain Kirk told him no, he did not see a difference. The man quickly stated, while in amazement that Captain Kirk did not know what he was talking about, he is black on the right side of his body and I am black on the left.

I remember how I was stunned by this --- and how in this show I was being given a lesson on pathetic human behavior. The lesson was so clear that it has had an impact on me ever since.

never have seen any re-runs though. Remember all the multi-racial crew. I never really considered it at the time, but a friend of mine recently pointed out that star trek was very PC advanced TV for those days.

.. the first time a black/white interracial kiss on TV was when Captain Kirk kissed Lt Uhuru. (different episode than the left/right black white race hatred episode mentioned above) I think the 2nd time was when Sammy Davis Jr. kissed Archie Bunker LOL!

BTW the left/right black/white people were still fighting even after their planet was destroyed and they were the last two of their kind left in th euniverse. That was the sad part.

Dan, you have a nice heart and you mean well.  However, in this case you are dead wrong.  Why don't you support your position and tell me what good Arabs have done for the United States.  Other than a few phonies PC Hollywood has propt up as character actors or show hosts a big fat zero.  How have they hurt and continue to plan to hurt the United States - ALOT!  Hmm.... how many buildings can we destroy, how many charity dollars can we sucker out of well intentioned Americans, how many buildings can we attempt and get caught red-handed trying to destroy, how many bridges and tunnels can we get caught red-handed trying to destroy - I think my position is very well supported.  Enough is enough.  Any "religion" that condemns all others as infidels to be slaughtered just does not belong in a civilized society.

I agree with you whole heartedly and if that makes me a "liberal weenie," so be it.

I am a veteran who volunteered to serve this country on my 17th birthday.  I am a lot older, and slower now but I am ready to fight again for the principles of our nation as specified in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I do not believe that the acts of misguided criminal terrorists condemn a whole, race, religion or nationality.
Or should we bomb Dublin for the murdering of innocents by the IRA, Or the land of the Basques for the bombing of tourists in Marbella, Spain by the ETA?  You know I could go on and on with examples.

We are all very frustrated because terrorism is so difficult to fight.  If we lose our perspective and reason and lash out blindly we will do just what the murdering bastards want.  We will become their best recruiters.
I want them brought to justice as much as anybody but in a way that will show the world what pitiful creeps they really are. Not by making martyrs of them.

Oops, sorry,  I got on my soap box again.

Please, everyone write your representative to open the visa process again so that our friends and loved ones can join us in the Land of the Free.

I heard on the news a few weeks ago (radio) that our government was aware of how general policy was causing problems such as individuals here have experienced. The implications were that action was in place to resolve these areas. How soon? Who knows? Will it not go to completion? Who knows - but at least there is awareness and someone is trying to deal with it.
