Title: trip to Moscow final plans
Post by: petem on August 17, 2002, 04:00:00 AM
I am set for my trip to Moscow. I am doing something different than most, I am baseing myself in Moscow at a apartment and bring in 3 different RW for 3 days each. I am also meeting one who lives in Moscow. I have spent 3-6 months calling and emailing, ICQ etc and had very strict requirements, age 29-33, hieght, no kids, parents must be still married, ability to talk english over the phone, never married. I have been to St Pete last year for 10 days.
Questions are: What are some decent but not expensive resturants you could recommend?
What things should I look for in these women to try to see if they are looking for a ticket out or are really interested in me?
Can I take a US digital telephone that has a message taker built in, will it work?
Any other advice??
Pete

Petem;

I am a sometime resident of Moscow, and I notice no one bothered to answer your questions.

The name of that resturant is the "Yelki Pelki", I don't think it's part of a resturant chain, as I've only seen the one place in city center.  The wait staff wear traditional costume from pre-Soviet era and the food is supposed to be more traditional than modern.  I will say the food is good, although it is not inexpensive, a typical dinner for two, with drinks will set you back $50+.  Generally, it is wise to avoid resturants and cafes anywhere near the old Arbat as these are tourist traps as well as the shops in this area of town.

And, your US digital phone won't work in Moscow.

regards,
BFH

Yep, that is the place I was referring to. My wife and I ate there and our total bill was less than $20, although we did not order any alcohol or desert. I recommend it because the food and service was good and I wanted to try authentic Russian food.
My wife ordered the food for me in Russian, she said that I will have the fish, you know from the river with red caviar. In my mind I was thinking...Oh no!...sturgeon? When the waitress brought the plate, it looked and smelled familiar...then I realized it was salmon! It was very good..

Yes I get it, when in Ukraine do not eat the fish...as when in Mexico, do not drink the water...or FSU for that matter!

The Salmon was from the volga river, one of the largest in Europe. My wife used to like to fish the Volga, north of Moscow and it is the same issue for swimming...as far away and up stream from the big cities as possible.
It was a suprise to me to see Moscovites swimming in the Moscow river, there is nothing but factories lining each side...on a hot day in July my wife and I took a boat escursion on the river, I saw thousands of people swimming and fishing in the river. I asked her if the water is safe?
She said probably not, most people in Moscow leave for the country during the summer...to escape the heat of the city and to swim in cleaner waters.

I asked her if she ate the fish (in Ukraine) and she said no way, the rivers and coasts are so polluted..  I really never could handle the thought of ever eating fish in the FSU..  All a factory owner would have to do to continue spewing his polution into the rivers would be to offer a small bribe here or there..
Now perhaps they have a few fish farms where that would not be the case and I would eat that, but how would you ever know!  I remember seeing people all the time fishing along the shores and selling fish at the roadside, and then a couple of miles later, you would drive past something like a Chernobyl spewing crud into the river! LOL!

Your girlfriend is very wise.  The Ukraine and some of the other FSU satellites were little more than toxic waste dumps for Soviet industry.  It will take years to do a proper cleanup, and right now there is little or no money to invest in such an effort.  There are a few declassified CIA maps you can download if you've a mind to bother.

Marrying a girl from some of these areas may cause you to produce FLB's during your marriage, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.  The biggest concern would be the increased probablility she might come down with some nasty form of cancer in her later years.

Most Russians love fish, it's a staple of their diet, usually smoked or salted is the favorite. Almost every Russian I know will prefer fish over pork or beef, although "Clinton" legs and "Bush" breasts are becoming a huge success and are much sought after now in Moscow.
The fish sold in markets and resturants in Moscow are mostly salt water species and are, therefore, pretty safe. The salmon was probably from the Pacific northeast where the red caviar comes from.  Very tasty and very safe to eat. Just about any food that originates in Siberia is safe. There are literally thousands of square miles of unpolluted country side in that area, as well as some of the world's most beautiful women.  (I won't delve into whether or not it's safe to eat the women.)

BFH

I know that meeting for coffee and dinner is one approach, but for the second that third woman to come to you for three days after the first has been with you seems to be asking a lot from a woman.  If they know of your three day plan, you might find them a bit stiff and their imaginations keeping them from completely being open with you.  Women are women and they might feel like sharing intimacy with you after another woman is a bit awkward for them.  If you want a good woman with modesty, discretion and one that will be only for you, then you should be sure to give that message to them verbally and in your approach.  Best of luck to you and I hope it all works out. I would definately hook up with an agency in the local area, in case one or two don't show or there is no chemistry from the start.

2 know right now that I will be seeing others. The other 2 have the weekend time, I guess they have to suspect it but I havn't voluntered it.
the 3 from out of town havn't been to moscow in 10-12 years, so they will enjoy seeing moscow and can be my guide as well.
I have done alot of prep with them, I think I have weeded out all the bad apples after months of letter writing and phone calls.
none have asked for $$

What is an expensive restaurant?  Also, Moscow is a big city, what area will you be staying in?

either Tverskaya or near proletarskya, working on that now, I don't want to spend more than $600 for 15 days for rent

There is a chain of inexpensive Russian resteraunts called Yolki-palki (not sure how it is spelled) and one is adjacent to the Bolshoi, near red square not far from Tverskaya street. Better to ask someone for directions.
If you want a good American meal, try the TJI Fridays at the shopping mall near Red square...a little pricey, but the food is the same it is here in USA.

Yes some advice, 3 days can be a very, very long time with the wrong girl...

From your post, it seems you are bringing the 3 women in from out of town I assume??  The problem is this- You will only be able to meet one and spend 3 days with her only. If you don't like one and know it in the first hour, will you stick it out for 3 whole days or send her home?  If you send her home early, what will you do with your time since you have no other plan??  If you like the very first girl and then send her home, what will you do, bring her back again??
Sorry, but I think it's important to be in a place where the women are local and accessible.  Will all of the girls be able to drop everything and come back to Moscow again if you call or do they have jobs and responsibilities??
As far as knowing if one is a scammer, you may never know in just 3 days!

Sorry to be so negative, but I just can't see doing it the way you are..  But I wish you the best of luck..

thats a valid point, but I am not making any final decisions on this trip. I think 3 days will be enough time to decide if I ever want to see them again. The follow up trip would be to their hometowns.

I also think 15 days is enough to see if want to continue this idea of RW's in the future, or is it more a strange dream that will not work for me.

The real question is airplane ticket within Russia, the women all tell me there are more than 1 flight a day to their cities, so its just whether they can change the return earlier or later. One is paying her own way so I have little control over that.

My backup is the one who lives in Moscow, plus my own initiative, I have been to 35 countries, so I can occupy myself very well anywhere I am.

There are no return trips for them on this, but I can if I want take the last 4 days to fly to the best prospects hometown to see her again.

A another fear is she won't want to leave after 3 days!!

that you are going to get bit in the ass with the "she is able to leave without a hangup in three days"

If such does transpire I will be interested to hear how you handle it with post trip posts.

Good luck to you.

As far as having some more backup.. You might want to contact someone like Jack, who can help you as far as resources there, ie honest agencies etc...

Good luck.
