Title: Patrick... Post by: WilliamF on August 10, 2002, 04:00:00 AM Like the new look. But one thing still bothers me. Seems like it would have been a good time to get rid of the words in the upper left-hand corner: "The Mail Order Bride Guide."
Why perpetuate such an insulting choice of words? Can you put it to rest - or is this someone else's call? Title: Patrick could use this internet search trick Post by: BubbaGump on August 12, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Patrick..., posted by WilliamF on Aug 10, 2002
Plaster the web site all over with the words "Mail Order Bride" but make the characters white on a white background so we never see it. Search engines would put this site early on their search list because it has the phrase repeated frequently. I read about that trick being used by car dealers in California. That's a very old trick and only worked in the old days of the internet. The search engines have constantly been refining their ranking criteria to better evaluate the relavance of web sites and checking text color against background color started long ago. By the way, "Mail Order Bride Guide" has been all over the site since the beginning (and we were even copied by someone who later registered the domain mailorderbrideguide.com) a while back. It was only on the message boards that it was removed some time ago in the old design when some people complained. Apparently many guys are only looking at the message board and have never seen the rest of the site. I want to have a consistant look to all areas this time. The logo is also the same logo that get's installed as a reciprocol link on other pages, so this time I'm going to keep it here. It's certainly not literally descriptive of the reality of meeting and marrying a foreign woman, but it's certainly the most used search engine phrase by people looking for information and the most common phrase used to describe marriages between Western men and foreign women who meet through agencies or personal ads. An excellent idea (sans Oscar). The phrase is definitely pejorative. I am reminded of the lobbyist who coined the phrase, "Japan bashing..." In an interview his most telling quote was, "..the person who uses the phrase is immediately my intellectual dupe" So it is here. It is one thing to be proud and in no way ashamed of our search and adventure, still the "MOB" phrase carries baggage full of dirty laundry. YOU CAN NOT MAIL ORDER A BRIDE! It implies a type of slavery and demeans by association all involved in the process. Its use should be limited to those who harbor our efforts ill intent, and therby identify them. It is the favorite phrase and indictment of our sworn enemy, the many-faced chameleon like, re-appearing scourge.....the troll! I need not the results of any poll; I have long banished this phrase from my personal lexicon, and hereby call on all involved in our pursuit to do the same. And if you hear it, recognize the gauntlet thrown down and do not hesitate to smote it in every vestage where it stands! Maybe later I will feel emboldened enough to quit being so meek and tell you how I really feel....... Title: How about "The Foreign Bride Guide"? Well, I really don't mind the "Mail Order Bride" phrase at all.. I am actually proud of the fact that I did something VERY different than the main stream! I didn't like what I was finding here so I am glad that I (all of us) had the courage to go this very different route.. I think it will be great to be able to tell grandkids someday about our "Mail Order Brides"! ;-) Actually, I did not find my girl in an agency or even "mail" her before I met her. I met mine there through a personal ad, but it's all same to me and I don't think anyone should be afraid or ashamed to say how they met their girls.. I feel we are all in a very special club if you will.. ;-) Oscar Title: I got mine through Fed Ex-how about-fedex bride :) n.t Post by: yoe on August 10, 2002, 04:00:00 AM Title: Re: Patrick... Agree that MOB is a complete misnomer and should be dropped. Title: Re: Patrick... Post by: Mark H on August 10, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Patrick..., posted by WilliamF on Aug 10, 2002
Mail order bride terminology never bothered me, still doesn't. I think you should leave it because even though it is outdated and politically incorrect......most newbies go to a search engine and type "MAIL ORDER BRIDE". I suspect it stays simply for that reason, yes Patrick? It's time in this country for people to quit allowing words and crap that really doesn't matter, to bother them. I'm so sick of political correctness. Mail order bride is a term to generically clump this activity. It does not in any way insinuate that you pick out a chick in a catalog and order her. However, we are "picking" out girls to visit to hopefully bring her here. If the words Mail Order Bride bother you, you will definitely have your hands full when your girl gets here and all along the way. I get teased and chided all the time by co-workers and friends/family. They do it in good taste but it's teasing nonetheless. I suspect many will have problems with that if they're not already. It's just words, why does it bother you few so much? Mark H. Title: Re: Teasing Post by: Rags on August 10, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Patrick..., posted by Mark H on Aug 10, 2002

Ken, Hey guy, howszit? It can only tarnish your love if you let it. I really don't get the big deal? As a matter of fact, our Anesthesia tech found a little "brochure" with a picture of a Phillipina on the front, and stated a bunch of junk about "Mail Order Bride". It looked like a little pamphlet you would find advertising a trip to Hawaii...it was about marrying a filipina. Of course, it made it's way to the assignment board with a little bubble caption saying "Oh Mark, me make you happy, love you long time". Another person wrote "I want come to land with big PX". I laughed, we all got a kick out of it and I continue on with my pursuit. SOmetimes it gets old but after a while it goes away. Mark H. MOB has gained a negative connotation. Strongly suggest you dump it from the site. Title: Second that Post by: oldbutspry on August 10, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Patrick..., posted by WilliamF on Aug 10, 2002
I've wondered myself why that phrase is used on a site like this. It certainly doesn't add anything to the site. Of course, if you are going for humor you could change the "Agency Lists" link to read "Order Yours Today From One of Our Fine Vendors!!" Don't forget the "Ask About Our Quantity Discounts And Affordable Lease Programs!" Later, John |
