Hi guys, I need your help.

My fiancee has her interview at the american embassy in Moscow coming up on July 3rd. She's got everything she needs on her end, but I have a question about my end.

On the embassy web site, it says to send "Employment letter with salary information and/or a copy of tax returns (Form 1040) for the last year." Here's the link:

So I sent her my last 2 years 1040 forms, front and back. I didn't sent a letter from my employer because I am self-employed. I thought everything was fine, but someone recently suggested that the embassy would need more info from me than that, like all the additional papers (schedule C, etc) that go with the tax return.

If your fiancee/wife went through this process, what papers did you send her? Was it enough? If I need to send more papers to my fiancee, I suppose I could fax them to her between now and July 3rd.

Or did I send everything that was needed, and everything will be fine? I don't want to screw this up.

Please reply ONLY if you have gone through this process yourself, I don't need any "armchair quarterbacks" or "second-hand stories". :-)

Interview was March 4, 2002.  I am retired.  We went to the window to hand in the various documents.  They took police certicate, photos, other forms.  We tried to give them the 1040's, the clerk promptly handed them back without looking at them.  No other financial info was offered to them nor requested.  The visa was granted with no problems.

Though it sounds stupid, there is nothing wrong with writing an employer letter yourself.  In mine, I explained what my business was, included copies of the latest invoices and payments from clients, and my W-2's from my corporation for the past two years.  My wife reported that they did spend some time looking at all of the financial papers, but didn't have any questions about them other than "what does your fiancee do for a living?"

Got first Notice of Receipt February 25.

Got Notice of Approval April 1st.

I was self-employed when I went through this process last year. What I gave my fiance (now wife) was last 2 years of 1099 (not schedule c)and a notorized bank statement with the average daily balance going back 12 months. A few deposite slips will not work, they want to know that you did not pad your account the last few months..so you need a 12 month reconciliation.
For my bank it was a very simple request, but I had to order it in advance and then hunt down the branch manager for his notary stamp.

For the guys that are not self employed, a simple letter from thier employer will do.

At her interview, she had to drop off all of her evidence(financial statements, police report,medical report, and her biographical info) at the window and then wait for her name to be called. The interview itself was just the formality of going over the paperwork and collecting a few pictures of the 2 of us togeather(other than those I gave for the petition).

Okay, so it sounds like I was right by not submitting all the attachments to the tax return, just the 1040 itself. Whew!

I hope I can get by without that average daily balance statement from my bank. Even if I had one, the amount would be real low since I tend to pay bills immediately and not leave much money in the bank.

I'm crossing my fingers....

You are right...1040, not 1099...

Have you looked at the US Moscow embassy web site? I cannot tell you what is the latest info, since I am all done with the "process".

But...you will get to jump through all of the INS hoops again when the two of you file for AOS.
