Title: Anyone use a cell phone to call overseas? Post by: Richard on June 13, 2002, 04:00:00 AM I'm having trouble getting to a private phone at work and getting a connection, using calling cards, to Kiev from the phones at work. I often have the same problems with pay phones in the area.
Does anyone use a cell phone to direct dial call to Easter Europe? If so, how much does it cost and do you get a good connection. (For the record, I have tried a couple of the calling cards recommended on the board.) Title: Not Sure if it Helps, But . . . I use AT&T Wireless for my cellphone - and I use WorldCom calling cards purchased at Sam's Club. I dial a toll-free number from my cellphone (paying, of course, for airtime) - then my PIN and then my destination number (all except the destination number is programmed into my handset). Calls to Ukraine run about $.36/minute for the card (though some newer cards are much cheaper) and the cost of my airtime on the cellphone. I get VERY reliable connections from this combination. Do you know if you could include your cell phone in a savings plan on you landline at home? ANybvody? Title: Why do you use the cell phone? Post by: MarkInTx on June 13, 2002, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Not Sure if it Helps, But . . ., posted by Dan on Jun 13, 2002
I'm confused... It sounds like there is no benefit from using the cell phone. In fact, you burn airtime minutes, and risk a bad cell ruining your call. Why wouldn't you just do the same thing from a "land line?" Is there some benefit from using the cell phone? Title: Re: Why do you use the cell phone? You might use a cell phone because you need to call from a work environment and your calling cards refuse to make the connection at the appointed time and you employer would not be very happy if you used *his* landline to call Europe!. I was caught up in a corporate restructuring last year: I used to work 4 miles from home, now I work 22 miles from home. I used to be able to go home at lunch time to make my calls, now I can't. I used to be in a private office, now I'm in a cubicle ... A cell phone might make it easier to connect at the proper time and be able to move to a more private area to make the call from. Yes, I use the cell phone w/ calling card to call her from my car in the parking lot during lunch....much more private that way. |
