Title: US to issue visa for shorter periods of time. Post by: Richard on April 09, 2002, 04:00:00 AM The story comes from my local paper, the South Florida Sun Sentinel out of Ft. Lauderdale: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-49ins.story?coll=sfla%2Dhome%2Dheadlines
The short story is the the US would like to limit tourist visas to 30 days, down from 6 months and business visas to 6 months instead of one year. I suspect that we will be visas that also allow us to travel in Eastern Europe for similar short periods of time. Title: Re: US to issue visa for shorter periods of time - so what. Half the people who enter on Visa's on any type just get lost in the States. Years later the US gives amnisty to all. Then if they want they become citizens. The correct and offical route is not necessary. Been there done that. Title: You Are Only Looking at One Dimension . . . The bigger deal - and what Richard was (I believe) trying to alert us to - is that governments practice 'tit-for-tat' diplomacy in matters such as visa terms. If the US decides to reduce the valid period for Ukrainian citizens traveling here on Business visas - it is a pretty safe bet that Ukraine will respond by limiting the valid term for US holders of Business visas to Ukraine. That will prove to be not only inconvenient, but costly as well. So long as we have such a giant disparity of economic standards between the FSU and America, we are probably going to have to deal with the visa regime in both directions. That is a sad fact of the present situation. - Dan |
