Title: Translation help - What is: esoterika?
Post by: MarkInTx on January 26, 2002, 05:00:00 AM
A lady that I am writing to said she could not find a translation for it.

The way it is used is is strange, because she uses a software interpreter to communicate with me. Here is the exact sentence:

"I take a great interest in philosophy and psychology. I want to more understand characters of the people and I read about it much. As me interests esoterika (there is no this word in my dictionary nor the interpreter software, but I think that this your word"

The only thing I can see from there is Esoteric -- maybe... but that doesn't make sense...

Any guesses?

Esoterics, means para-psychological phenomena..
Reading the future, telepathy, hypnotism.
There are many level of studies on the subject,  some are very serious, others are a little like horoscope studying.
When done seriously, it is not a flaky subject.

Not of the mainstream.  Psyschological,  philospohical,  relio-spiritual etc...not erotica.

No one's perfect...

Actually... I think considering the newness of the "letter relationship" it's best that it means esoteric...

Could be worse, she could have said that she likes studying "women's studies" like the Fems here in the states do.

Yikes! That would send a chill down my spine!

My wife says it means ...hysterical. So maybe the software put in the wrong word or she likes to study people that are on the edge. (Personally I'd stick w/ the 'erotica' interpration :-)

My thought would be that she is saying that her interests are esoteric, which in English, the word is esoterica. I think it means an interest in things that are not commonly understood, or areas of thought and culture that are not considered to be in the mainstream. It's actually a good quality to have an interest in esoterica, I think.

For example, a woman might say she likes music. A common response might be pop music. An interest in esoterica would be an interest in forms of music not commonly studied, such as jazz fusion.

A person who describes their interests as esoteric is trying ot say, usually, that the interests are varied, and not part of the common mainstream culture.

Or, she meant erotica. Which is an entirely different subject. :)

In conjunction with philosophy and psychology, esoteric makes more sense.

Although I am still holding out some hope for erotica... lol... here's hoping ;-)
