Title: Learning English by website.
Post by: Oatmeal on January 22, 2002, 05:00:00 AM
My fiancee wants to learn English on a website.

I have searched the archives but I haven't come up with anything yet.  Anyone know of a good website for learning English as a Russian speaker.

Thanks.  Jim

My wife has been using Englishtown.com for the last 9 months, and finds them quite good. There is enough going on to keep things fresh, depending on the teacher for the online discussion groups, it is interesting, but at other times, it's better to skip the group, and work on other things.

This may be a lot of help.

Try
Global English at
http://www.GlobalEnglish.com/

or TravLang Travel Languages at
http://www3.travlang.com/

of course actual in class ESL would be best, but until that starts, maybe one of these could help.

Checking with your local school district or community college for ESL classes. Most of these are government subsidized and at very low cost. It's much better for your RW to learn English from a native speaker.

I agree that going to school is the best choice, but I realize sometimes this can be a heavy burden if she can't drive herself and considering the distance to the nearest school and your schedual. My wife spoke deccent English and started going to that school but soon realized sense she knew basic English the school was not worth the effort we would both have to share. That dictionary link I posted not only translates, but it also says the word in English over your computer speakers.

Just a shot in the dark, but why not just translate English written material ( at least the words she doesn't know ) by going to http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages/slavic.html#russian
