Post by: tim360z on January 19, 2002, 05:00:00 AM
How do I tell just where the ISP is etc???  I just noticed that at the bottom of an email after her ISP # is.... that it reads (may be forged).  Does that mean anything???  Where do I go to ID ISP #'s???

Do a whois search at www.arin.net on the ip number, and it'll usually give you generalized results of who the gateway provider is or the ISP itself.

You can try to resolve the IP address to a hostname. One way is to start a command windows and type "ping -a" and the ip address. That will give you the host name of the sending computer. You can also try to do a tracert on the IP address. Email headers can be forged and emails can be autoforwarded from various servers to conceal their origin. Domains can also be spoofed, which causes internet router problems. I don't think a penny-ante operation like a MOB scam is going to go to all that trouble when it is not necessary.
