Title: Russian General Store - Houston
Post by: BarryM on December 14, 2001, 05:00:00 AM
I recently visited the Russian General Store in Houston, TX. It's quite an interesting place. It is a authentic Russian deli and grocery store. They also sell Russian books, music, movies, and gifts.

I bought several Russian books for my language studies. One book, for children, is a dual language book called "Isn't this surprising?" or "Странно или нет?" by Aleksandr Kuznetsov. It's a great book for those of us who are learning Russian language and for those wives or fiancees who are learning English.

Two other books I bought were also for children, all Russian language. One is called "Detyam" or "Детям" by Korney Chukovsky(Корней чуковский). The other is called "Vot Kakoy Rasseyannuiy" or "Вот какой рассеянный" by S. Marshak(С. Маршак). Both of them are fairly easy reading for those who have a few months of Russian language under our belts. For those of you rearing bi-lingual children, they are very good reading books.

I bought two more advanced books. One is a book of poetry by Anna Ahmatova(Анна Ахмантова). According to my Russian teacher, this is very deep and complex poetry to understand but the words are plain and the poems are short. I figure if I can understand the words, thats enough for me. I'm not ready for 3rd year Russian Literature just yet. The other book is the New Illustrated Encyclopedia Dictionary. It has pictures... about right for me right now.

For those of you who are interested, here is the info for the store. I don't know if they do mail order, but you can always call them and speak to someone in English.
