Title: So she wants to go back to school?
Post by: Daytona on November 23, 2001, 05:00:00 AM
Hi Guys, I haven't visited this board in 8 months, since our wedding in March.Thought I would pass along some real advise if your future RW is interested in schooling in America. You can do a couple of things in advance. Don't discount the value of a russian eduation: (American equivalent). I teased my wife that her Russian College degree was worth probably 20 credit hours in an American University. Big time wrong! She was smart enough to bring all her Russian Diplomas and Academic Records with her. In retrospect we should have had them translated and certified in English before she crossed the pond. She could have had that done for $3.00 instead of $160.00 here. Next, send the originals to a US Eduational Consultant Service for evaluation, I used one reccommended by the University she is applying to. (www.jsilny.com). for $100.00. Her degree from the "Institute of
Consumer Cooperatives" is equivalent to a US Bachelor of Science Degree and she has been accepted at UCF in their accounting program.
Hope this info helps! Happily married to a beautiful RW.  Mark

Hi Daytona,

I'm less than an hour up the road from you in Jacksonville.  We did the same, including the J Silney evaluation.  My wife was a stomatologist (dental surgeon) and is enrolled in FCCJ to to get licensed as a hygienist.  My question is what did you do about english?  My wife speaks and understands english fairly well, but the school has her taking english classes BEFORE she will be allowed to take regular courses.

John, I've heard of this prerequiste for English prior to being allowed to take core courses! Have your wife take the (ESL) English Second Language test. Out of 7 levels of English competency, my wife scored 6. It was enough to convince the school to forgo this requirement. If she scores 4 or 5, than (ESL) courses can do nothing but help Wish her good luck from me. Mark

Title: Thanks, Mark! Excellent post... n/t
