Title: Ukraine Computer Help??? ZIP Post by: tim360z on October 23, 2001, 04:00:00 AM Hi All,
I have a friend in Ukraine and she recently bought a computer. (Dads got some dough). Anyway, she cannot UNZIP photos I send her. I told her to contact her ISP because all her photos arrive to me ZIPPED, and I thought she probably has an UNZIP feature from her ISP. She called and they said NO, to UNZIP she needs a special program. Strange! Here Winzip is a free download, but I do not know if it works on her system. Anyway, how do I help her to UNZIP, she has no idea. With my ISP's ZIP and UNZIP is a built in feature, automatic. Is there a Wizip type program for over there. Best, Tim Title: Thanks For The Help Post by: tim360z on October 24, 2001, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Ukraine Computer Help??? ZIP, posted by tim360z on Oct 23, 2001

create a self-extracting executable of the winzip program and send it to her. Then all she has to do is run the .exe and install winzip. Title: Re: Ukraine Computer Help??? You probably should have sent the photos in a jpg format like jj was saying below. Some programs let you vary the photo quality like a lot scanner programs do if the photo is scanned into the computer. Or you could have created a file that unzips itself. Most files are sent that way in case the person receiving the file doesn't have pkzip. Title: Re: Ukraine Computer Help??? first install winzip from the internet. www.winzip.com You should send photos as JPG in which case you do not need to zip then. JPG is a compressed format. Just make sure the file size if not too big. They will display automaticly in outlook express. If you install the new XP this has a grat featuyre that helps manage picture(Jpg,tiff) and MPG3 files. So if you send photos are they automatically zipped somewhere down the line or do you zip them before you send them? I don't know why you would want to zip photos. I save the zipping for large files and photos (.jpg files anyway) aren't very big. I usually just send them unzipped and they get there just fine. She could also download an evaluation version (I'm still using my evaluation version several years later) at http://www.winzip.com/ . It might take a while for her to finish downloading it from the Ukraine though. Just for the heck of it I downloaded the Winzip 8.0 upgrade. It said there were international download locations at download.com but I couldn't see a list anywhere and it never asked where I was downloading from. Title: Re: Ukraine Computer Help??? Tim, I haven't been to Ukraine, but I've been to Russia, and Microsoft Windows is everywhere. Send her Winzip and that should do the trick. John Title: Re: Re: Ukraine Computer Help??? Yeah, that might be the better option than the download thing, assuming you can send her stuff of course. Spending $14 or whatever to send a tiny Winzip disk wouldn't be ideal to me but if you're going to send her a bunch of stuff anyway it would be worth it to put in a floppy. |
