Title: social security card Post by: apk on October 04, 2001, 04:00:00 AM What is the procedure for getting a temporary ssn card now?
Do we wait for after the wedding day, or is this something we need to do now? What other identification does my fiance need along with her birth certificate? I'd say it's 50/50 whether or not you'll get an SSN without first having the EAD card, regardless of the actual regulations. So don't be surprised if they say no dice despite your protests to the contrary. Personally, I suggest you wait until after you get married and get the EAD card so that your future wife can use her married name to apply for the SSN...easier than changing the name after she is married. Take the birth certificate along with her passport showing her K-1 visa and I-94 stamp, to the Social Security office. They will probably struggle to find the proper regulations - but that is ALL that is needed for her to be issued a SSN. It will take a day or two, but the SSN will be issued and you can pick it up from their automated telephone system - then receive the physical card maybe 2 weeks later. The card may say something like (Valid for Work Only With INS Authorization) - which is the EAD and also readily available from the INS. I hope this helps. - Dan |
