We had a discussion going down below on the catholic church's position on birth control,a spinoff of the new pope and new or conservative thinking.I came across to me the best argument yet against their possition.
Reading the Economist magazine yesterday on the future of the Church it brought up a whole different angle on the birth control thing thats so basic but it had not occured to me- - AIDS.The church insists that the use of condoms is unnaceptable because of the possibility of intercepting a possible conception.So they say you can't use them to protect from AIDS either.The Economist basically chided them for not being able to discern between greater or lessor evil.The supposed evil of the possible intercepted contraception compared to a person getting AIDS.Seems like a no brainer to me.How many millions will die for that little bit of wisdom in policy thinking?
They did,however,give the church credit for being the sole supplier of medicine and education in some 3rd world countries where the governments basically do nothing.

Your post caught my interest on a few points you bring up.  It’s my understanding that the “Catholic teaching opposes the use of condoms for artificial birth control” as opposed to the use of condoms.

Actually the Catholic Church is silent on the use of condoms against HIV/AIDS. In any event there are conflicting viewpoints and teachings regarding the use of condoms as evidenced at these links:

Hi Pete

What is it that people don't understand about the word NO? The church says sex outside of marriage is wrong. That the basic purpose of sex is to have children and bond two married people together.
  When we violate rules there are consequences. Do you expect the church to assist in the violation of its rules? Abstinence may not be fun but avoiding sex outside of marriage is an acceptable form of AIDS prevention.   If you understand mysticism you understand the belief in the Judeo Christian god, not just a supreme being who nmay or may not exist in whatever form SHE wishes. No one has to believe the dogma of the church, they can become whatever they want. But if one claims to be a catholic, one must follow its teachings whether convienant or not. If a person dosn't believe in its principles why belong?  If you don't belong, why comment on its teachings when they don't affect you.

  There are many forms of relegions some are dogmatic and some say figure it out for your self.  Non catholic christians lean heavily on the bible although some sects are more liberal and may acept birth control and abortion, understand that there is a passage with the story of onan who spilled his seed on the ground and was punished with death.   I am not trying to be righteous here. I am only saying that How I live as a catholic has no connection with the rules of the church. I will not negate my responsability by saying the rules of the church are unfair because I want to have fun.  jim c

Jim,
I comment because the catholic church teachings have big relevance in Colombia and the third world.I think those teaching contribute to lots of children parents  cannot care for,abortions as a last resort and AIDS cases.
And also,if I admit it,and I DO,I am STILL pissed off at them for the nonsense I endurred as a kid.Guess you got over that one or accept it.
And their incredibly cruel past,in the name of GOD?? Like you can see at the inquistion exhibit in your city a few blocks from your properties.Seems like the ultimate evil on earth,not a religion.
I agree,if you clain to be a catholic you should go with their teachings although I think alot of Catholics just blow off their ideas on birth control,don't want to have a few more kids waiting for them to join present time on that one.
Guess I should let go on this one,but that Economist article got me to bring it up again.
