Title: bringing a computer into colombia
Post by: adventuro on April 06, 2005, 04:00:00 AM
Hey, I was wondering if anyone has brought a computer, other than a laptop, into colombia.  Did you declare it when filling out customs or did you just pass thru the checkpoint with the computer.  Also, how did you carry it???  Did you have it in carry on luggage or in a separate box that you checked in???  Did you also bring a screen and or printer too, or just the computer.  Appreciate any feedback on this.  thanks in advance.  John

There are two things you need to keep in mind. First, regarding items checked in, suitcases get priority over boxes. If your flight is full, there is a chance that not every checked in item will make it onto the flight. I recently checked in a small copy machine, new and still in the original box. My flight was full and the box never made it onto the flight. It got bumped to the next day flight and I had to return to the airport the following day to retrieve it. The box would have fit into a large suitcase which is what I should have done.

Secondly, as Pacino aluded to,if you keep it in the original box you may have to pay a customs tax on it. I had to declare it at the gate and pay 45 US dollars. If you take it out of the box and pack it as if it is used, you are more likely to get the green light. Lessons learned the hard way.

I brought one in to give to my wife while she was waiting for her visa. Just the computer, keyboard and mouse which I had packed in the original shipping box. I hit the button and got the green light so I didn't have to explain anything.

I have brought computers, haven't had a problem.. Just tell them it's for personal use not business.. Also don't bring a new computer in a box, if it's new take it out of the box as if it is used..
