Long Wait

For anyone contemplating filing a petition for a brother or sister to emigrate form the Philippines.

My neighbor just received the packet from the NVC for the I-130s he filed for his sister and his brother & sister-in-law. He filed the petitions in 1979, so that’s a 22-year wait so far.

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but he said the INS is no longer accepting petitions for siblings from the Philippines (?)

Ray,
 I remember seeing a bulletin board in front of the US Embassy in Manila when we were there for Melly's interview back in 1995.   Dates of VISW applications they were processing were posted - it said they were somewhere in the 1970's on their non-spousal VISA's!!!   It looked mighty discouraging to me to even try for one of these.   What's the point unless you are very young?

Hi Steve!

Both his brother and sister are well into their 60s by now. They are too old to get much of a job here, but I think they plan on using the visa/green card mostly for visiting. There are other family members here in the States and they have never had the opportunity to come to the US for a visit.

So, I think they will rotate between the US and the Phils while they are still healthy, but still plan to spend the majority of their time in the Philippines.

BTW, he originally filed 3 petitions, one for another brother who has since passed away. I guess it's sort of like a contest to see if you can live long enough to get your visa :-)

How is that little one of yours doing?

 Yeah, if somebody comes here to live after they are too old to work at least 20 years, they are too old to build up any significant savings/retirement $'s and they won't have much of a comfortable lifestyle on their own.  Starving in America is probably not exactly what these people envision when they apply for the VISA.     I can't see doing it much past your mid forties myself.  

  The little one is doing great.  We took her Trick-or- Treating last night for her 1st time and she had a ball!  Of course, at 10 months old she didn't know exactly what was going on (she's never even eaten candy so that part of trick or treating was lost on her) but she loved all the kids and activity.   When I would carry her to the door of each house, she was kicking and flapping her arms with wild enthusiasm!   I'm finding out how much more fun holidays are when you get to watch them through the eyes of your own kid.
