I have just finished reading a book that I think is good enough to recommend.  It is called "The Rescue" and was written by Steven Trent Smith.  It is about a few groups of Americans on the island of Negros at the time of the Japanese attack, how they got by during the occupation, and their subsequent escape by submarine later in the war.  In addition to their story, the book also follows the capture by resistance fighters on Cebu of Admiral Fukudome and the battle plans he carried with him and the transfer of those plans to the allies on the same submarine.  I particularly enjoyed it because many of the characters are associated with Silliman University in Dumaguete where my friend graduated.  I found it to be good but maybe not great.  Worth reading if you have an interest in these types of things.
