... in response to Wife jailed for sham marriage......, posted by Ricardo on Oct 2, 2004I know of a situation where the husband is trying to jail his soon to be ex-wife. A colleague of mine was introduced to the mother-in-law of a business associate of his. She was a divorced Brasiliera with a married dauther and a 14 year old daughter. They married after knowing each other for 45 days. She works illegally in the US by over-staying her tourist visa.
Well, as he tells the story, his wife and son-in-law started asking for money for various things. Money in the tens of thousands of dollars. He acquiesced at first and then started saying no. Immediately after that, he finds himself accused of domestic battery, finds that his credit cards have been maxed out, his personal checking account, not thier joint account, was emptied. He believes that the entire family set him up because the son-in-law knew about his financial situation.
He is out for blood and I think his lawyer has already started to depose potential defense witnesses. He says the DA is coming around to feeling the accusations against him are a sham.
