Hi,

This Steve Valdez, the owner of Colombian Sweethearts in Medellin.  I just received my login from Planet-Love, thank you to the owner, and I know several guests that have already visited Colombian Sweethearts are members of Planet-Love and have written about us.

I want to tell you guys I am just another Gringo like you looking for that beautiful, special woman.  It is good to see that there is forum like this and I want to entertain any questions you have for me as I know that there already have been numerous questions and write-ups and I want to thank the Planet-Love members who emailed me and then posted my answers.

FIRST ABOUT ME:  I spend half my life flying around the world and the other half here in Medellín.  I've lived in Japan, Moscow (15 minutes walk from the Red Square), Europe, Asia, and 2 blocks from the beach (Ipanema) in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.  I’ve seen everything, just about done everything and speak enough Russian to get me shot at (which happened in Moscow but that’s another good, but long story).

I’ve used an agency in Russia and been to or used most of the agencies in Cali.  I’ve had a couple Russian girls try to drug me (and there are good women there, but can be very dangerous), had 3 Brazilian girls try to seduce me (that I still regret) and had a deported Colombian guy in Cali bring me what he said where nice girls but were really pros, semi-pros, rookies or I am not sure what their story was, but I didn’t go back to him.  And this is nothing against Cali or the agencies there.

I ultimately fell in love with Colombia, especially Medellín and never dreamed I would open an agency here but did.

HOW I GOT HERE: I left Rio de Janeiro one day to see Colombia as I had heard Venezuelan guys say how beautiful the Colombian women were (and the Venezulanas are not bad!).  I arrived at noon in the airport, Rio Negro, Medellín, and had one hand on the door, ready to bale out on to the curb (my former military training) and hunched down in the taxi because I had heard what everyone hears about Medellín, it’s dangerous, but its not.  As I started down the mountain and saw how beautiful the landscape was and how this old taxi driver seemed like just another nice, honest guy, I slowly started to sit up and relax.  When I got into the city and started looking around at the women on the street going out for lunch, I knew I had arrived!

That was January of 2002. Through a series of events (another long story) I partnered up with a semi-gringo and opened this agency in Jan 2003.  I subsequently bought him out and since then I have been trying to build what I would want as a gringo coming to Colombia: A good and honest Agency and most importantly, to meet a sweet, beautiful and honest girl; and they are here.

The Paisas have a combination of sweetness, elegance and physical beauty I haven’t found in a lot of places, and I fly around the world and have had too many girlfriends!

So please ask me whatever you would like.  I will give you on honest answer to whatever info you would like to know about Medellín and the women (Paisas), Russia, Brasil, or Asia.

I am just another 41 year old honest gringo looking for that right woman, so shoot!

Best Regards,
Steve Valdez, Owner

This is not really a complaint, but I wanted to make sure you knew that your site does not function quite right under Mozilla or Firefox browsers...the ladies individual galleries do not load and work properly.

I can and do browse it with Internet Explorer...just wanted you to be aware of it if you were not.

Ciao

Hi Steve: Can you advise those guys who may use your introduction services about other acceptable lodging? Are there any decent budget-oriented places to stay for someone who wants no-frills? Anything decent in the $20-$30 range?

Rebel,

If you want a $20 to $30 (50,000 to 75,000 pesos) room, you will have to go closer to el Centro, but this is not the best part of the city, especially at night, nor do they have very good rooms or services.

There are small "no-frill" hotels for 110,000 pesos ($44 USD) to 120,000 pesos ($48 USD) per night, in El Poblado or in Envigado (best areas and closest to all of the action).  The ones already mentioned by Gary Bala (Torre Poblado) and Papi (Zona Rosa) are good.

There also is a 100,000 to 110,000 pesos, plus tax, place at El Campestre and I will follow up with the address and phone as I am in the US and have to contact my office tomorrow.  There also is a very basic apart-hotel close to our house for 100,000 pesos, plus taxes.

We also offer a very nice 2 bedroom apartment for rental with maid service, Brand New furniture, TV, Full Kitchen, Balcony, etc. and close to Parque Lleras.  Price starts at 120,000 pesos (no taxes) with discounts for extended lengths of stay.

Colombian Sweethearts also offers rooms at our Bed & Breakfast without using the Introduction Service.  The reduced rates for the Bed & Breakfast start at $55 per night, which includes:

Breakfast and Lunch
Free Beer, Coffee, Juice and Soft Drinks
Unlimited Calls to the US and Canada
Free Local Calls
Free use of High Speed Internet
Free Cell Phone Calls (short duration)
Executive Concierge Service from my Staff

It will be hard to find this value anywhere.

Most hotels in El Poblado or Envigado  will run anywhere from:

Dann Carlton: $89 USD per night without breakfast
Intercontinental: $69 USD per night with breakfast
Park 10: $70 USD per night with breakfast

Note:  Additional taxes charged at all of the hotels.

I hope this helps and I will add the phone numbers tomorrow of El Campestre and the other Apart-Hotel.

I just looked at the Medellin brand, Pilsen, and you are correct Papi, it's only 4%.  As for beers go it's pretty light and on the mild side, but hey, I'm not complaining as the price is right.  I just wish Steve would get some of that nice beer from the Bogota Brewing Company though.  Living in the Pacific NW with all the brewery's there, one gets a little spoiled.

Gotta make this short as a lady just called and is coming over to go on a dinner date with me.  Man, I wish I had more time to write these blasted trip reports but the ladies are a calling.  Someone has to keep these ladies busy.  I'm the only gringo here and they all want a piece of me...help! ;-)

Lot's to share with you fellers.

Luego.

Steve: Thanks for the information. I'll have to look at some of your recommendations and also some places more toward el centro and figure out what my comfort zone will be. Thanks again.

Rebel,

If you are planning on staying in Medellín for three months, we can talk about a discount for staying at Colombian Sweethearts or about finding an furnished apartment.

I also really would not recommend El Centro, because you can find a much nicer place in El Pobaldo, Laureles, Belen or Envigado for not so much more and El Centro really is not the best area to be.  You see the change in the people and environment immediately when you go there.  The best night life, restaurants and Malls are in the other above mentioned areas.

Papi: Thanks for the recommendation. Since I'm going to be out and about traveling for 3 months or so, I'm looking for budget places to stay. If it was only going to be a month,  I could spend more on a nicer place.  Hopefully, I can find something in the $25-30 range.

[This message has been edited by Gary Bala]

One alternative to consider is Torre Poblado Aparta-Suites, Cra. 42, No. 9-28, Tel: 268-0244, in Poblado. They are clean, spacious apartment-style suites, with kitchen, mini-bar, cable tv. Located around the corner from Hotel Dann, and very close to Parque Lleras and all the shops, eateries and cafes. $110,000 pesos per night, plus tax. Stays of 10 days or more qualify for discounts. Regards.
