Hi

A little off topic but..

I just purchased my Thanksgiving and Christmas tickets to Lima.

I am always bringing tons of things with me to Peru. I usually have two LOADED suit cases.
I know the airlines have limits but I see people bringing a lot more than the posted limits.

My biggest fear would be to get a charge for the extra stuff. Its usually thing I pick up at Garage sales (used clothing shoes etc).

Has anyone really ever pushed the limit? What do you think?

TE AMO PERU!!!!

Hey Jimmy,

Looks like things are still going good with your novia/fiancee. (Cool!)

Though until recently; I have only traveled through out North America and in my experience, I have never seen extra luggage get denied.

On my recent trip to Venezuela it was the same. What happens is that it is usally charged like freight. It gets treated as though there are extra shipping charges. The bad is that your "biggest fear" will be true ... you will get charged. The good is that it is like being able to travel with your package; and you will know that it made it safe to it's destination, because you will be delivering it yourself.

Hope this helps,

V-Dude

I happened to have the bookmark for Continental. Scroll down to the international section.  Looks like two checked bags at 70 lbs each max. Extra bag charges are expensive but still a lot cheaper and faster than normal freight (maybe $3 a pound for normal freight to LatAm).

If there is a connecting flight on an international flight the 70 pound limit still applies.  However if you stay a few days at one location and move on to another, be aware that the limit is 50 pounds for many countries.  Extra fees would apply.

I checked with Avianca yesterday and had a little bit of a surprise regarding weight restrictions.  I found out that they only allow a total of 50 pounds or 22 kilos to be checked in on domestic flights and ten pounds carry on.  Crap, I brought two suitcases each weighing 50+ pounds with me to Colombia as I will be here for awhile.  Extra weight on the airline is expensive something like US$2.00 per pound.  At least AeroRepublica didn't weigh my carry on last week, something that Avianca claims they will do if I travel with them.  I will have to look at an alternative, less expensive way to get some of my stuff to Medellin.  Next time, direct or connecting flights.
