When I wrote that US tourists MAY not visit Cuba I was referring to the law, the executive order which prohibits such travel.  It is true one can defy this law just as one can defy other laws.  So a US citizen CAN go to Cuba as a tourist, but this is not permitted by US law.

I didnt read your cite but I know about the Mariel Boat Lift and I would agree Castro got the better of Carter on that one.

You asked what is my preference for US policy.  The current policy has no rational basis.  It was crafted only to appease a pressure group: Cubans, and not just any Cubans but the older generation that hates Fidel.  And we all know that this group may have been singlehandedly responsible for Bush's election to the presidency by throwing Florida to him, so is it reasonable to assume he is pandering to them.

Morever, I have read some recent polls (can't cite them at the moment) showing that a majority of Americans and a majority of Congress (but not two-thirds) want the embargo terminated.  I agree with the majority.

I also believe in consistancy and fairplay.  We have never been to war with Cuba, yet we have it in an economic and political stranglehold.  Vietnam, another communist country that jails people who dispute its policies and with whom we warred 25 years ago and who nationalized US property as did Cuba, is now our friend and we can trade with them all we want.  This is as it should be.  Those who say we must not be friends with a dictator are intellectually dishonest, as we befriend dictators around the world when we perceive it is in our interest to do so.  Sadaam Hussain was our friend when he opposed Iran, and we knew his proclivities then which made Fidel look like a girl scout.  The list of others is long.

I just dont see any reason that our government cannot be consistent in important international policies such as these.  Both Republican and Democratic administrations deserve blame for this, but only the current president has the power to change this situation.  If Kerry is elected, I will reserve appropriate opprobrium for him if he fails to change this policy.

With your way of thinking why don't we just send an invation to all the cooks and terrorists in the work telling them to come on over. Don't you get it friend... 911??? The world as you know it is over. It's no longer biz as usual. While you complain about your right to travel unrestricted and if it were so.... some nut next to you would be serving you a C-4 sandwich. Your thoughts about Korea and China are insane. You imply...You can do biz in North Korea so they have more freedom. Insane!!!! My goodness I know the Democratic party members are balless but now I must add another less.... clueless.

Terrorism is the act of threatening, if not attacking, a civilian population, to paralyze commerce, mobility, and, hopefully create social disorder.  The US does not, has not, and will not begin to to participate in that kind of activity.  The american populace would not support it.

And if you are talking about Abu Ghraib or similar, spare us.    Coalition forces let damn near everyone in Abu Ghraib walk out the door, and, curiously, there are no horror stories in the media.

Exporting terror are you a nut! Great Czar's ghost.... you do nothing Democrat. I think you'd wait till they were on your doorstep then cry for help. Let somome else give up their life to save your ass.

The democratic part is a group of people who alone do nothing but together as a group decide nothing can be done.... words so true.

Did you know wwe support Saddam at one time? We also sold weapons to
Iran in the mid 80's? Did you know when we were unhappy with who Chile
had elected president we had him killed? We supported a lot of dictator
through the years as long as they were not communist. The funny thing about
you giys it was both parties that support these guys not just the republicans
so get off your soap box.... By the why Bin Laden was support by us in the
80's when he fought the USSR.....

You lost me, for one.  Diplomacy is ugly.  It is rarely moral, and it is always a compromise.  We supported Saddam in order to contain Iran.  It had to be done, and Reagan/Bush rightfully decided that the US would not support troop deployment to a Soviet supplied ground conflict.  The Russians would have happily supplied Iran bio/chem weapons to be tested on US troops.

Haiti is probably the easiest slam-dunk diplomatic catastrophe in recent memory.  A total fiasco.  But people like yourself seem more interested in Iraq than Haiti.  Why is that?

I think you got the wrong person here... champ... Number 1 if we are so
interested in making Iraq democratic nation then yes what happened to Haiti?
Maybe it is because they are black... heaven forbid I would ever say that....
What about countries in Africa.. all hell breaks lose and we are no where to be
found... It kinda interest me because think about it would we invade a African
nation to stop them from killing each other if they had large oil resrves?

I used the support of Saddum as only a example.... and I use no president
democrate or republican as a example because it really does not matter what
party they are they all suck as far as I am concern.

The thing I can tell you that does piss me off... why the hell do we send all
our jobs to china, india ect? Why if we are looking for cheap labor we do not
look at Colombia? Think about it do you think people would grom Coca
leaves to survive if they could land a job paying them 400,000 pesos a
month? I think maybe we should start looking at our own back yard instead of
building up the Chinese ....

If I want the advice of a goofball, I'll slap you on the back of the head and wake up that little peg legged hamster that operates the drool-powered waterwheel of thought in there. Until then, sit in the corner and wait until someone speaks to you.

I notice that you never let an idea interrupt the flow of your writing. I mean basically you seem to have no point to your posts beyond giving your fingers some exercise by dancing them randomly over the keyboard.
