Here is a link which can give you the precise language put in the federal register, today...

http://www.hervisa.com/#

I'm not sure what it means, but it is now official, and it sounds good...

I followed your link and there it was, dated today! I guess that INS lady in Dallas doesn't know what she's talking about. My luck, that't the office I will have to deal with (when the time comes).

Michael,
INS employees doling out bad info concerning VISA paperwork to marry a foreigner is something that anyone dealing with meeting potential mates in this way should be prepared to deal with.   I had it happen on more than one occasion myself.   As I have said before, don't rely on any one source for instructions as to what forms to file, what to include with the forms, where to send them, sequence of events, etc.   That includes advice given on this board too!

Personally, I would first try to go to INS written publications or the instructions on the forms themselves and then if you have questions call a INS agent and try to get clarification.   (The first time you try this you will cuss me!  Expect an hour each call.)   If what they tell you seems to contradict the written instructions on the form call again and talk to another agent.   I even had to go so far as to get my Congressman to write a letter stating that my interpretation of the law was correct because the agent, I talked to would not back down on his messed up version of requirements to file for a Spousal VISA.   If I had listened to him, I would have had to wait for 2 years after meeting in person before even filing the VISA paperwork.

Oh, you don't have to tell me that INS is incompetent. Remember the 1980 Cuban refugee boat lift? I worked for the feds (first for FEMA and than for the State Department) for two years on that. The basic problem is that INS tries to be cheap and they post their open positions at least two grades lower than similar positions in most other branches of the federal government.....and to fill their GS-2 positions (entry level clerk), the only people who apply are those that didn't pass the GS-4 test...sad, but true. Go to a federal building, and the guy who asks you to sign the book and/or looks in your briefcase is a GS-7, a begenning Boarder Patrol Agent is a GS-5.

Hi Michael,

I am sorry to hear that you worked for the Feds on the Mariel Boat Lift. What a nightmare that must have been! It began on April Fool's Day in 1980 and didn't end until September. I live in South Florida and worked as a firefighter/paramedic during that time. We were used as cheap labor, instead of paying more nurses and doctors to treat and care for these people. We were expected to do things we weren't medically qualified or trained to do, which I refused. I was told I had a "bad attitude"...even back then. ;o)) I suppose some people enjoyed the prestige of being called "Medico" or "Doctor" by the Cubans. They would work us 24 hours a day. Then I spent the next few years going on numerous assaults and murders, which were often a result of old prison feuds in Cuba.

I worked part-time for FEMA with USAR (Urban Search and Rescue). It seemed like all I ever did was go to meetings and get guys to fill out the latest revised forms. Same info, new improved form. They didn't pay for the numerous hours dealing with paperwork, only when we were deployed. Some pencil pusher with no knowledge or pratical experience always seemed to be in charge. Big cluster f##k and huge paper trail.

Dave,
Speaking of paperwork and Forms, I remember in my very early days with the Government, I needed a particular Form and asked a secretary where to get one.   She told me I had to get a Form Form and fill it out to get the Form I needed.  I looked at her and laughed thinking she was joking.  Joke was on me - we actually have a Form that has to be filled out and turned in to get any other blank Form.   I've always wondered what would happen if we ran out of the Form Request Form from which all Forms are obtained???    Man oh man, I hope I can escape this nutty Government job before I start to think it's normal!  LOL

...NOT!!! ROF...TNTTAI (Trying Not To Think About It) =8-0

Steve,

I am starting to remember what I miss most since I retired. LOL Filling out forms to get blank forms. Sometimes when we sent in the completed forms that they sent us, they would be returned because we didn't use the latest form. When we told them that they were just sent to us, we were told that was no excuse. We should have made another request for newer versions (that we didn't know existed). When we asked what to do with the boxes of obsolete forms, we were told to hold onto them and not throw them away. This is all starting to remind me of the small forms battle I had with the INS. It's a good thing Ray told me to just download them. I was about to go postal. =8-0

Hang in there. Government retirement isn't so bad. ;o))

Steve,

I never got the same answers twice from INS and I never got a form that wasn't outdated. I finally had to take Ray's advice and download most.
