Green Card/Advance Parole Question

We were married just over a year ago.  We filed her Adjustment of Status package, just less than a year ago.  INS States that if she has a Green Card she does not need Advance Parole and in the next breath says that since we are still in the AOS period that she will need Advance Parole.  My wife HAS a Permanent Resident Card with an expiration date two years after the date we applied for her AOS.  Every Piece of paper we have tells me that this IS her Green Card.  How did she get it so fast?  I did notice that a "Green Card" is supposed to be good for ten years, hers is only good for two.  Is there a "Status" thing that I am missing?  Everything on the INS site contradicts itself, which of course is NO surprise!  LOL!  Everything says that she has a Green Card, but everyone else is surprised that she has one before the AOS period is up.  Am I missing something?

HELP!

I'm calling INS this morning, but I thought I'd pick your brains as well :c)

It looks like you already got some good advice here. Just make sure she returns within a year or she may lose her status.

Your wife does not need to get an Advance Parole. I had my Permanent Card (conditional)expired, but with a stamp in my passport(AOS in process) when I went home to the Philippines for 3 months.  Conditional cards (CR6) are only good for 2 yrs, while Unconditional card(IR6) is good for ten yrs.  But if your wife should be out of the country for a period of more than six months she should get a re-entry permit in order for her to come back.

PS. The new green card is not pink in color, it's green.  I just got mine 2 weeks ago.

What she has is her green card and she can leave the country and return with it without problems. The first green card for an alien spouse of a US citizen always expires after two years. In my case (quite a few years ago) this card arrived in a couple of weeks after adjusting her status. Prior to renewing it you'll be called for an interview. If it's apparent that you guys are still married, a permanent resident alien card will be issued that does not have an expiration date. Your question about AOS period is unclear. If she received her resident alien card (green card - except it's really pink) her status is already adjusted to permanent resident. My wife and daughter left the country and returned a number of times both with and without me using their 2 year cards and never even had a question about it in the immigration line at LAX.

Hi Howard,

My wife has the same card.  The 'conditional' part will be removed after the final AOS interview, which occurs in the 90 day period before her 2 year anniversary of AOS application.

In this period we have travelled to RP and Canada with no problems - the 'conditional' permanent resident card gives her the same status as the 10 year card.  No need for Advanced Parole.
