When someone in Colombia has an Internet Connection in there home, how do they pay for it ?

Do they pay by the connection or the minute or hour , or do they have an unlimited amount of time like we do. I seem to remember my wife telling me that it cost a lot of money , but since we are no together any longer,  i cannot ask her and i was curious.

In my case we pay a service provider, Telesat $32.000 per month and about 500 pesos per minute online to the fone company branch of Emcali.

The connection I "borrow" in Cali is Telesat also, but I was not not aware of a local per minute charge (and I would think I'd be hit up for that if there was one).  Maybe it's a different type of account?  I noticed one thing unusual was that the dial-up number had 12 digits.

The local per minute charge I believe he's referring to is just the charge the telephone company charges for local telephone line usage. If you look at your bill closely, their is a local usage fee.  It's not a flat rate as most of us are accustomed to in the States but it's variable and based on use.  So if you're using your phone line 8 hours a day because you're dialed into the internet, you'll discover that your telephone bill is at least two hundred thousand pesos per month.

To further confuse matters, there are special prefixes that are dedicated for internet use only in Cali.  I discovered that ATT for example had several call in numbers in Cali, one was with the special prefix and one was not.  The special prefix number turns out to be the better deal as the per minute telephone usage rate is quite less.  Anyway, ATT is not the only ISP in Cali that uses the special prefixed numbers, others do as well.

500 pesos (18 cents) for every minute you're connected? Wow! That's $165 USD per month if you're online 30 minutes per day. Is that DSL or dial-up?

P.S. If my math is right, it's easy to see why internet cafes at 2000-3000 pesos per hour are so popular.

I have an ATT ISP account that has some local dial in numbers in Cali.  My company paid for the ATT dial in connection but I covered the usage rate on my telephone line in our apartment.  I was connected to my company's system through the internet for about 8 hours per day and the local usage charge was about 240,000 per month.  This was in a strata 5 barrio.
