Why do they insist on putting every low value, high poundage item they can find in their suitcases?  Also, why is it necessary for 30 people to go meet them at the airport?

Burbuja

I bought the kids a Nintendo GameCube for Christmas.  Well, it's for me, too.  My wife bought a new game for the kids today.  Problem number 1: It's for PlayStation.  Problem number 2: They didn't figure that out until after they opened the package.  No refund, no exchange.

Oh well, it's more fun than setting your money on fire.  At least they got the pleasure of opening the package and looking at the shiny new disc.  They can use it for a frisbee.

Steve

Correction: My wife informs me that the disc was a gift from someone else, probably the children's aunt.  So it didn't cost me money, it's an opportunity cost.  I doubt if my wife understands the concept of opportunity cost.

I'd be interested in reading that post.  Being older and set in my ways, I know I have my fair share.  Quirks with my Latina?  Definitely, but I wouldn't trade her for any of my ex AW's.  Regardless, keep posting, they're fun reads.  Happy New Year!

Well, the low value high poundage items are probably gifts for the 30 people. Its OK unless you have to pay $150 for having overweight luggage like we did last trip.
My wife told one of her friends a friend of ours was going to Cali.We get this 40lb box from UPS to send with him.Bulk candy and stuff like that.He took one look at it and said no way.I think it was part of our overweight luggage on our trip.
Everyone expects a gift from their newly rich Americana, and she loves to oblige.Life is simple here. Its a big deal to them, one small gift.

Those low value high poundage items constitute the list of things that she is bringing back for the 30 people meeting her at the airport.  This one goes away with time - for it even becomes a hastle for the latina.  Future trips back home may become shrouded in secrecy so the friends can't provide the list.

Mike I can't answer your first question, but you seemed to have missed an important fact about Latin people if you don't know the answer to your second question.  Quite frankly, for me, the fact that friends and family are so much more important to Latin people is a big part of the draw.  As my wife has so keenly observed, Americans are not a particularly friendly people and it shows up in many American lives as unhappiness.  I am sure a testiment to American unfriendliness.  I would be dead today by my own hand if I hadn't made the trip to Latin America a year and a half ago and met my wife because I had nothing here in America and it wasn't for the lack of trying.  Americans my age are a tightassed, keep to themselves bunch.  Latins are more open, wear their hearts on their sleeve more and are much more social.  30 people at the airport can be a good thing or a bad thing, it is all on your perspective.  Frankly I like 30 people at the airport seeings how I had years of 0 people at the airport here in the good ole USA.

Could you imagine if latins down in S.A. were like us... I think we would
be more worried about getting a armed invasion here. I would love to
have 30 people waiting for me at the airport!!

Iswote is right on -

"30 people at the airport can be a good thing or a bad thing, it is all on your perspective. Frankly I like 30 people at the airport seeings how I had years of 0 people at the airport here in the good ole USA."

I was thinking the same thing yesterday at the airport (in St. Louis). My parents are retired but it would be way to much trouble to ask them to meet me at the airport.

I think Americans forget how nice it is to see family right when you come home. I guess we travel so much that we are used to taking a cab etc.

If you think about it - whats better than a big Welcome Home! greeting when you get back from a long trip.

ALSO - I come back home to my big empty house and Lexus and all I want to do is go with the family for a ride to the market in the little Tico.

I prefer returning by myself to the Burbuja Bungalow...unless someone wants to show up to help me with my luggage.
