To the list:

My office has software that restricts what websites we can access.  Planet Love is restricted.  I want to know how to cheat the system.  I asked my son, who is also a programmer, and he said I might be able to bypass the  restriction by using a tunnel and my home computer which is on DSL.  I don't know what a "tunnel" is and he hasn't had time to come explain it to me, yet.

Are there any other computer geeks here that know how this could be done?  Don't bother telling me that I shouldn't goof off like this at work.  When they give me work to do, I do it.  When they don't I'm not going to just stare at my monitor.  Half the time my boss doesn't even show up.

Here are the easy methods that may work in your case:

(1) Use a proxy service, catch is finding one that is not blocked, http://www.snoopblocker.com/ is my favorite.
There's a whole list of them at:
http://www.space.net.au/~thomas/quickbrowse.html
This is always a good idea because you never know when a google search leads you to some popup page that forwards you to a porn site - you may have been browsing innocently but explain that to your work - proxy service eliminates that.

(2) Is your office using IE?  Then that's usually a piece of cake to work around.  Download another browser, the best one out there is Mozilla Firebird, plus you'll browse twice as fast.  http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/
You'll need to look at your advanced settings in your IE to determine the proxy settings - then just mimick them in the alternate browser.

Now get back to work!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll give that a try.

Why does changing from IE make a difference?  I think they're using some other software to block the websites.

They could be using another buffer - but alot of times they don't, it's all passed thru IE in those cases (The beauty of windows is they've mucked it up by integrating the IE browser - it's part of the operating system - you don't hear of security issues with Linux).  The proxy sites are always a good bet as there are always new ones popping up.  There are also pay-for proxy sites that may never land on the blocked list radar if you wanted to go that route.

Not sure what he is talking about by tunnel? Are your running windows XP at home? If so you can try remote desktop. This will let you "drive" your home computer from work. Obviously this is better with broadband as you wouldn't want to leave you home PC hooked up all day on dialup.

There are other methods as well. PC anywhere, and www.gotomypc.com  Iused gotomypc as it was all web based. I installed the client on my novia's computer. I could log into and take over her computer anytime, from any computer hooked to the net etc. Came in handy when she would have PC problems.

It would also be funny if I could log in, turn on her webcam. See that she was still sleeping so. . .  ..fire up the digital video editing software. Load up a loud merengue clip. . . . .and let her rip!  ;-) not that I've ever done that mind you;-)

I have Microsoft ME at home and I don't see that it contains remote desktop.  I looked into GoToMyPC and they want $20 per month for that.  I'm going to try RealVNC at www.realvnc.com.  It's free.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm from South Texas and lived in San Antonio in the early 70's. My sister still does and I go every year-Alamo Heights area. OK, I know it's San Antonio de Bexar or is it San Antonio de Bejar. Do other people know San Antonio date back to the 1500's? My favorite city!!!

I don't live in san antonio any more. I did really like it there and will be there next weekend. There is a possibility of moving back there in the near future. For now, santo Domingo and NY are where I hang my hat.

As far as computers, I was always more into the actual using of the computers to do cool stuff. . . video, graphics, audio etc. I have learned far more of the tech stuff than I want to. My buddy runs a small IT consulting company and I have worked with him a little bit learning as I go. It sort of happened by accident. he had some clients that wanted some basic web stuff done, so i tagged along with him to work and we were going to visit those clients. When we arrived at his corporate office, they were hit by a nsaty virus and email and network was choking. We dropped everything and I wound up working 16 hours with him that day to get rid of it! He needed my help the next few days to continue clean up etc. From then on if I was in NY, I'd work with him whenever he needed an extra set of hands etc.
So I've picked up more networking stuff along the way.

I don't even know how much he is paying me. After I do the work, he hands me a check. I gues i could do the math and figure it out, but I'm lazy!

Zorro

I haven't felt the need to get snoopy lately with my wife, but I used to go crazy trying to check up on my ex.  There are all sorts of tricks you can use without resorting to anything illegal like wiretapping.

Of course, you can buy tape recorders which only run when they detect sound.  Even if you don't get the other side of the conversation (inside the telephone) you can catch the gist from what she's saying recorded through the air.

If you have DSL and look up your IP address you can log into  NetMeeting and look through the web cam and listen to the microphone.

You can secretly install GPS tracking in your car (that she drives) and you can pay for real time Internet tracking so you know where it is at any moment.  (Also nice if someone steals your car).

You can buy a cellphone, set it to silent answer, and then leave it in her car where she doesn't see it (need I say more).

In the end, if you think she's running around on you, she probably is, and you should probably move on, but it's not easy if you love her and she keeps saying she loves you (which my ex said).

... in response to Snooping around, posted by DallasSteve2 on Dec 5, 2003

Now I get what that previous post was about! I guess I am just too lazy. If I ever feel the need to  check up to even close top that extent, I'd just bail!!!

Gotomypc and remote desktop etc, I am sure could be used for snooping, but they aren't very good at it. gotomypc requires a client to be running on the machine that you want to control. It also pops up a window to let whoever is on that machine that  you are logged in etc.

I got gotomypc because my novia was really new to computers and would get into a jam from time to time. I also would need to transfer files from her computer to mine from time to time. Explaining over the phone how to FTP would be futile!

I just got back from helping a buddy of mine "fix" his computer. He "lost" the navigation tools in Netscape! I tried helping over the phone but he has had a computer all of about a week now, he couldn't follow along no matter how slow I went. So. . . . he got in his car, drove 45 minutes, in the snow, to get me, 30 minutes back to his place, it took me less than 30 seconds to "fix" the problem, then he drove me home and had to drive back home!

I should have built his machine with xp but it was a rush job and didn't have an xp license laying around etc. If he keeps this up, I'll have him buy XP, PC Anywhere, or subscribe to PCanywhere, so I could fix thinsg from almost anywhere!

I guess I should have been more careful with my post, so as not to look like I was checking up or snooping on my novia. We are both really open as far as that stuff goes. She knows all my computer log ins, voicemail passwords etc etc etc. On a few ocasions I came home to see her translating my messenger conversations with my buddy. She would be PISSED. Not because she found any dirt, but because she went through a TON of effort for nothing. This was before she got the hang of cut and paste and would copy stuff by hand into a notebook, then type by hand into alta vista. It was so darn cute!

Actually the way I found out my ex was cheating on me was I installed a
keyboard recorder and got her login and password. Then it was a snap to
find out what she was up to, off course I printed all the e-mails in case I
needed them in the future. I hope that guy in England enjoyed himself...

I did that, too.  That's when she finally admitted there was someone else.  The emails were impossible to deny.
