Greetings.....

I had thought about posting this last week during the discussion about driving, but was delayed during the recent upheaval of inflamatory retoric....

when my wife Paty arrived here in North Carolina we purchased a jeep Cherokee for her to drive....

We began to practice driving as she had never driven in Bogota before she moved here.

The cost of insurance would have been incredibly more expensive as she would have been as inexperienced driver...

Last year we visited Bogota and the family. During our vacation she took a drivers class there....100 Dollars, 5 hours of practice and she now has a Colombian drivers license.

We took the drivers test here after some more practice and received her NC drivers license.

We presented her Colombian drivers license to the Insurance company and as a previously licensed driver the rates were for a normal driver.

100 dollars saved several hundred dollars a month for 3 years....

worked well for us....

PS
I think that having had a friend teach her to drive as suggested in one of the posts would have been a much less stressful way of approaching the situation.... Smiley

I was told my insurance would go up tremendusly when I added my wife but it was pretty small.I think abut $100 a year more to add her to the Jeep Grand Cherokee she drives, alhough the bill went up recently.I would think anything related to her would have come when I added her.
She loves the jeep but when my car went in the shop they couldn't find me a luxury car so gave me a PT cruiser while they were  looking. She likes that little car and took it over and I am driving the Jeep. Will save some money in case the insurance does not pay my full car rental.

I recently added my wife to my GEICO policy.  There was a surcharge added because she was viewed as an inexperienced driver.  I was told that her previous history as a driver in Colombia was irrelevant because she could not estblish a verifiable history of tickets and accidents.  The inexperienced classification will remain for 3 years.

My insurance did go up,probably because of policies like you mentioned. If she was the same age with same driving record here it would probably not have gone up.But I was surprised that it only went up about 15%.Recently we got another increase of about 15% but I assume thats not related to her. Also I some times get a refund from them, based on their loss expenses. Its with State Farm.I should check. And maybe its time to shop insurance a little. I might be able to save some money.
