Were not in Kansas anymore
My first trip to the Philippines was a great experience. It was filled with both good and bad events. Things I liked most were the friendly people. The 2 Luzon born and raised gals I met were nothing but trouble.
Most letters I received from gals in the Manila area ended up with them constantly asking me for money. ( Gold diggers. I have only tin and steel ) I decided to concentrate on the area of Mindanao and the Visayas. I would highly recommend this course of action to anybody starting out. It seems that most of the Filipino's already living in US are also from Luzon. Many immigrated here from the Marcos era. My first flight to Mindanao was on a propeller driven plane. A very interesting experience. Zamboanga del Norte was truly like another world. It is a great town with great people. I've not been back for many years but heard it has grown with new hotels, internet cafes, malls etc… Unfortunetly the first penpal in Pinan who was a school teacher did not work out. I was quite disappointed.
The Adventure of a Lifetime Continues
Over the years I have traveled to the Philippines on about 6 different occasions visiting penpals in Davao, Cebu, Manila, and Bohol.
In late 1998 I wrote to several ladies. I was preparing for my trip to Mindanano to meet my number one at the time. When I spoke to her on the phone for the 3rd time she did not sound like she was very happy to hear from me. I asked her if it was safe to come to her island she informed me that it was very dangerous and said with a giggle that many foreigners were being kidnapped. Knowing this was not the truth I asked her to tell me frankly what was wrong. She mentioned that she still had a boyfriend although she had not told me before. Her boyfriend found out about me and was understandably upset. I told her that I would not bother her anymore.
At least she did not try to lead me on or to try and take advantage of me.
Next up. "soulmates"
