When a Colombian enters the U.S. on a K-1, when is that person assigned a social security number?  I think its necessary for both parties to have one in order to get a marriage license.

She can apply immediately for the SS card, it will be issued with a not for work stamp above the number. We applied 3 days after her arrival last year. When you marry and file for adjustment of status, she can go back and have her name changed and if she has her work permit they will also remove the not for work stamp from the re-issued SS card.

That is very interesting because two weeks ago my fiancee and I went to INS to get a temporary EAD.  INS told us that while they could give us the temporary EAD, SSA would not issue a number to her.

INS told us that in order for SSA to issue the number, they (the SSA) want a form from INS that indicates authorization to work.  INS also told us that they (the INS) would only prepare the form if we filed for adjustment of status and apply for work authorization.  That means getting married.

If you know something I don't know, please tell me.

nope, it is not necessary. she will get one, after you are married, and you go to the INS and "adjust her status" and take that paperwork to the social security office.
