Yes!  This is very true.  Even if you build a very small and limited vocabulary it helps.  The girls are very patient at listening and helping.  My grammer is terrible, but my vocabulary has grown at a rapid rate due to talking on the phone with my girl every day.  We can have very serious and detailed conversations now.  It takes work but I am working at communicating, I am not concerned at this time with getting an "A" in spanish.    

In my opinion you will learn more about the person while  struggling through a conversation alone, than you will with a translator going with you on a date.

You're right there. Somehow the Spainards didn't see the Bishop's titles "Defender of the Faith" and "Protector of the Indians" as mutualy exclusive terms in those days.

Or, as my college Spanish teacher was fond of saying: "History tells us that the Spainards came to the new world for God, Gold and Glory. Although not necessairly in that order"
