The municipal workers of Cali have been on strike for two days now. And I don't mean they just went home or carried a few signs. They have baricaded major streets and are burning old tires and other such trash in the roads. They have taken over the waterworks, sewage works and possibly the electric and telephone. So says my lady who lives there and some of the on line news services. So far as I've seen, nobody has been hurt, YET, but the mayor has ordered the police that the strikers will NOT block streets or interfere with trafic or services tomorrow. Some of the reports conflict, some say that the city has asked the federal government to send in skilled workers from other places to keep the water and sewage plants operating, other reports say they asked for help and then withdrew the request. I know I called Martha a lunch today and she started to tell me about it. She said that her daughter had to stay home from school because she couldn't get there. I asked "Why? Are the transportation workers on strike?" and she said no, the city wrokers, but they had the roads blocked and it was just too dangerous to go anywhere. Then the phone dropped and I've called about 50 times since then and can never get through.

Anybody in Cali right now can tell us what's really going on?

Dude, I ran all over the city yesterday, running errands. (I am leaving Monday for Quito.) I didn't see any of this that you wrote about. I went from Chipichape to the other side of El Centro and over by Pinioñ and I didn't see any of that. This is the first I heard of it. Matter of fact, the only thing I saw closed was the two turnaround points near Chipchape because they were being repaired.
Course, Colombia being Colombia, today might be different.

That's good, I guess. Wonder how you avoided it? Here's two articles from the on-line version of today's El Pais newspaper. As you can see, the mayor has banned all public demonstrations and marches etc. Even President Uribe has called the mayor to discuss the problem. Also they are talking with the Superintendent of Public Services, Eva María Uribe (wonder if she's the president's wife, or it just a common name and/or coincidence?). Yesterday's newspaper even had a picture of a major road totaly blocked by a burning bacarade and lots of demonstrators standing around it. I got through to Martha for about 30 seconds of terrible connection on the phone tonight and could not understand her very well, but I think she said they were still striking. Then the phone line quit and I couldn't get through again. I don't know about the phone problems, if it's just her phone or what. I've tried two different cards and 2 different 10-10's and can never get through.

Burglars, car thieves and purse snatchers in the Colombian city of Cali say they will go straight for one day next Sunday in protest against "white collar crime".

A spokesman for the criminals, Jose Nieto, announced the "work stoppage". "We want to protest against the corruption that is dragging our country into misery," Mr Nieto told Radio RCN.

Cali, Colombia's third largest city with 2 million inhabitants, is about 500 kilometres south-west of Bogota and home to one of the country's major drug cartels.

Mr Nieto, a self-styled poet who has done prison time for theft, says the miscreants are going straight to draw attention to the plight of 44 million Colombians.

Five Parliament members, including former National Assembly president Armando Pomarico, have been indicted for corruption since 2000.

Last week, 82 Colombian policemen, including the former chief of the narcotics squad, were indicted by the chief prosecutor's office for embezzling US funds provided to help fight the war on drugs.
