My fiance and I were talking last night about someone that she knew that was headed over here..She mentioned that he was coming over on a tourist visa, but that he knew some people who fixed an "Arranged Marriage"for this this guy. I indicated, that may not fly with the INS as they will research the relationship and possibly find it bogus. She said she had heard many people did it that way. I was wondering if anyone knows what the statistics are on how many of these incendents of faked marriages are detected by the INS every year? Reminds me of the movie, Green Card..just a different culture.

Zeb When I was in Cebu at the US consulates office in 1996 The INS guy told me there where 60,000 bogus cases a year coming into the USA from Philippines. He told me this when I ask him why they where making it so hard for my wife and I to marry.   Humabdos

PS
Its common for rich filipino's to pay as much as $20,000 to bring over there relitive in this way it happends all the time.

The following is an excerpt from an article about fraudulent marriages in the Seattle Times, 8/1/99:

"The INS typically issues 10,000 fiance visas a year to foreigners planning to marry Americans. Some INS officials estimate that up to one-third of thse marriages may have involved fraud, but only 80 to 100 annually are prosecuted. Only in extreme cases, such as a serial offender are the American spouses indicted."

Course if you don't report the income to the IRS, you may have real problems!

Thanks for the stats Hum... that's a lot more than I would have figured. What makes me wonder is, if the woman here that is already a citizen realizes the risk she is taking buy playing along with this type of charade. But there is probably money involved too.

And remember we must allow for the Embassy being closed during weekends, PI holidays and uh...People Power Protests too..That could totally change the number even more...Let's see..Hmmmm maybe somebody working in the back room forgot to go home.

I am not sure that 60,000 made it to the us or if he ment they deal with 60,000 cases per year BTW there are 70 or 80 million filipino's 80% of which would love to come here.

Hi Hum,

I guess my fiancee and her family must be in the other 20%. One is here only because her husband is. They are planning on living in the Philippines in the future.

My Colombian neighbors are only paying $3000 to marry their relatives and one is a doctor. I will have to tell them to raise the bribe to reflect the current market rate for  eligble bachelors. ;o)) I think they may have already been busted by a disgruntled former fiance. LOL
