Charlie,

It sounds like you're at the thinking about it stage in the process.

Latin Euro is a correspondence agency, where, as you know you are buying addresses.  There was one actual agency in, Recife, I think, but I don't know much more than vague recollection.  You're probably going to need to consider the correspondence method if you're interested in Brazil.  My opinion on why there isn't an established agency scene like Colombia, is because it is not as good of a business as just a regular tourism business.  So why make less money, with more difficulty?

I think there's some real generic advice that Dr. Hoda has summed up with the Check yourself, before you wreck yourself slogan.  It's good advice, in a nutshell.  I'm not asking you as a question to post a reply on but just something to consider, since this isn't an easy process.  Are you ready for a life long commitment to someone?  Do you have unresolved relationship issues?  Do you know what you want and have to offer in a relationship?  etc.

A good general book on Brazil is Insight Guide Brazil, published by the people that make the Discovery Channel.  It is a bit dated, but a good overview of how big and diverse Brazil really is.

I think there may be things you could generalize about women from culture x vs women from culture y, but it will still eventually come down to two individuals.

As far as the specific site, BrazilNuts/LatinEuro/someother name.  Here's some of the "problems".  You cannot get addresses by region or city.  There is no date of when the person submitted their photo/letter and also no date of when it was posted. (It may have been over a year in both cases).  The woman may not have known that her photo would be posted on the internet.  My experience, and impression is that generally the women listed are sincere and real.  I'd say that generally you can typically expect a 20 to 30% response rate.  Various people have posted their results and they might show up in a search of the archives, but I believe that is correct.  I think this is a good value, both in terms of your time and the cost and effort.

You might hear some crazy stories about Brazil, just try to put them in context.  It's not all about Dancing the Samba in Carnival in Rio (I think Bahia would actually be more fun for Carnival, but just my opinion).  The typical women will not be a prostitute or transsexual, although if you go to Rio and go to the red light district this might be the case, I can't say from experience but it seems to me the likely source of these kind of stories.

I'll be glad to try to answer your questions, when I have time to post.

thanks happy in brazil for your insights and recommendations.i really appreciated seeing your response to my post.in answer to your question concerning my readiness for this "endeavor"..i will simply say,yes..i am.i was blindsided by an unexpected divorce(she left for a doctor she works with)3 years ago.i havent been in a serious  relationship with a woman since.i get a sense that the "sweet and devoted woman" ratio might be much higher in some other countries and cultures.that is my hope anyway!i have chosen brazil for a search simply because i have had some contact and correspondence with a couple already and i am mighty impressed with their "sweetness...i also appreciate your offer for help in the future.ill most certainly  have questions that will come up.thanks again HIB..charlie

LatinEuro did send me the list of about 150 profiles they have from Rio de Janeiro State, which I can send to you if you want. Rio State also has the highest surplus (is that the word?)-- 315,000 -- of females to males.

If you were interested in FSU women and would still like that lighter look, concentrate on the south of Brazil, where there was a lot of immigration from European countries. You can find that European look without the attitude. Personally I tend to like darker women, but I came to the south because it is a safer place to live and study.

As HappyInBrazil said, don't get too worried about stories about transsexuals or transvestites. I've seen a few in the Kobrasol neighborhood over on the mainland about five miles from here, but they're pretty hard to miss, even more so if you are looking for the wife type and not ho-strolling. There was a kind of funny thing this morning on National Review Online, in Jay Nordlinger's Impromptus (http://www.nationalreview.com/impromptus/impromptus082902.asp), which I'll quote:

Quote
You remember that David Letterman used to have a segment called “Brush with Greatness.” (Maybe he still does — I don’t watch too much TV at that hour anymore.) (Because I’m out on the town.) (Ha ha.)

Well, two days ago, I’m at the golf range — Manhattan’s only one — and I come face to face with Renée Richards, the man/woman who was one of the most famous people in the country for a year or so. She was a professional tennis player who changed her sex (from man to woman). “Dr. Renée Richards,” she was. I’m sure it was the first I had ever heard of transsexualism. One great controversy was whether she’d be allowed to play on the women’s tour (I believe she was).

Anyway, she was a momentous cultural figure, and she was standing right in front of me. I have one thing to say about her, and you’ll think this is amazingly silly, or colossally prosaic: She looked exactly like a man who had had an operation to change himself into a woman. Just as she should have looked.

I mean, if you took a time-traveler from the 1600s — or 200s or 1800s or whatever — and showed him Renée Richards, he’d scratch his head for a minute and say, “That looks just like a man who somehow had himself changed into a woman.”

Now I, Master of the Obvious, will conclude this item. [end quote]

A few months ago, when I looked at Fire & Passion, there were a couple of women who looked like...well, you know. But that's the point; they're obvious.

Culturally, I think the south of Brazil is more conservative, and there are plenty of nice women around who would love to get married to a good man. Don't extrapolate the "sworn to fun, loyal to none" mentality which Rio supposedly has to the rest of the country (I have never been to Rio and can neither confirm or deny that this mentality is prevalent there.)

One place I'd stay away from is Curitiba. It's a fine city in many ways, and an outstanding example of good urban planning, but the people are pretty cold and aloof by Brazilian standards. There are some attractive women there, but Florianopolis is a smaller city with more attractive women. Pôrto Alegre, I'm told, has a lot of beautiful women, and they outnumber men by about 82,000, but I'm told that the people of Rio Grande do Sul ("Gaúchos") are also kind of stuck up by Brazilian standards.
