... in response to Hmmmm, posted by Patrick on Apr 26, 2002

I think it could conveivably work in theory but I don't think it's plausable.  He would have to make an international connection to his modem in Missouri and most likely on an Entel line which are not the quality of ATT.  I would be surprised if he could connect at anything greater than about 9600 baud as the international lines are not as clean.

As an example, right before every trip to Cali, I make an international dialup call on my ATT long distance line (from California) to ATT's  local ISP number in Cali.  I have to try it several times before it will even connect and when it does it is usually 9600 baud or something even less.  Now this is going from the U.S. to Cali, going the other way I would imagine to be worse.

I see no reason to go though this strange process of dialing back to the U.S. at international rates unless the only way to get his email is though his DSL account.  I thought he had mentioned in a note to you way back that he had another method to get to his email that bypassed going through his DSL line.

If I wanted access to the internet in Barranquilla or Cartagena, I would buy one months service with an ISP.  There are quite a few companies offering dialup services and he could easily get the whole thing paid for and set up in a couple of hours.

After learning his Colombia posts come from a Missouri DSL account, I'm more skeptical than ever.  I guess we'll have to wait and see....

Patrick,

Given that you and Hilton probably know more about computer hardware and software than I do, yes that all sounds possible.

The suspicions I have are not about his business, and working from Colombia because most likely I'll have to do the same thing once I get there. But, not to the same degree.

What seems strange are the logistics of his trip. That's all.

But, I could be wrong. He could be there.

there are people that just want to tell tales.

I think for such people, an experience like this, would be a big ego booster, and possibly a money maker for slick con artists. I'm not saying that Hilton is either of these types of people, I'm speaking generally.

Pete, just imagine the types of characters (men and women) that visit agencies. Do you think they are all trust worthy individuals? I highly doubt it.

Also, I'm sure there are many guys, with limited resources and other personal baggage, that know about this kind of pursuit for a foreign wife, and would love to partake in the experience of meeting many different kinds of women.

For example, a guy I have known for a long time and who has a mental illness, but is functional, is all thrilled about my travels to LA and the number of girls I met. He would love to do the same thing if he could, but first he would need to get off SSI, and work a decent job, and take more responsibility for himself instead of relying on other people. He even told me that he started writing a few girls in Russia, telling them that he works in his father's business as a manager. He made it sound like he had allot of money, and that his dad owns a big farm, with a large farm market, and that he was going to own the farm and market one day, etc. etc. etc.. It was all a lie because it was such an exaggeration of the truth.

The truth is that he does the odd jobs around the business, makes a little dough on the side to supplement his SSI check, the business is a mom n' pop shop that makes a good income for a single family, and the farm is only 13 achers, not 100.

How do I know all this? For God's sake, HE'S MY OLDER BROTHER !!!!!!!!!!    LOL !!!!!!!!!!

Eventually, when I get married, he'll be the first to flip out.

Aaron,
I was giving Hilton the benefit of the doubt.I hope he is for real and finds his ideal lady in Cali.
You bring up a great point about people talking a good game.Mostly this is limited to guys who talk on web sites and E-mail girls who never make it to Colombia because that requires some money. There are some exception however.I remember a guy who was at latin love when I was who had almost no money. He was saying I have this check waiting for me when I get home.So who volunteers, without being directly asked, to lend him some money.Yup.Me.I even gave him the rest of my pesos when I left and said he could pay me that later too. There was a comraderie amongs the guys that caused me to let my guard down.I never heard from him,I e-mailed several times and finally got an apologetic mail but never any money. Then I heard he was back down there the next month.Must have found someone else to hit up or at least decided he would rather see his girlfriend again then pay me.We were talking about 600,000 pesos,$300 at the time.
How a guy like this will ever get a girl here or support her if he does I don't know, but it didn't stop him from trying.I think the girls think all Americans are loaded and just being able to fly there proves it.If you tell them you make $2000 a month they think you are rich. They don't understand how little that buys here.
And no,I am not in the market for a bridge.

Pete,

Plain and simple, you got suckered. But, I've been suckered, too.

But, I can't believe you fell for his line..."a check waiting for you when you get back to the US"....WOW!!!!

That's a classic. But, actually you probably helped him out allot because he was broke, and in another country far from home.

Actually, in Cali if an American came up to me saying that he was broke, and I had some extra money, I would make sure he could atleast get a few meals. And I would ask for information about who I could contact for him back in the US so he could get a plane ticket home.

There's a guy down in Tijuana who's been pan-handling using a sob story for years.  I almost gave him money myself, but it all fell apart when I took him up on his offer to accompany him to the bus station.  He would approach tourists in TJ and tell them that he had been thrown in jail by the Mexican police and all his money and ID were taken.  He had to get back to Los Angeles to go back to work soon so he wouldn't lose his job and just needed $5 more for the bus fare.  Offered to have you come to the bus station in TJ with him if you doubted him.

I've seen him three times over several years now.  He's a good actor and doesn't look like a bum. I think he does pretty well for a pan-handler.  He looks like he works out regularly in a gym so I assume he's able to pay the rent and live decently on what he makes begging.

... in response to Hey buddy, can you spare $5?, posted by Patrick on Apr 26, 2002

There was a woman of about 25 that used to hang out at a Dennys at one of the exits on rt 5 near San Fernando Valley about 20 years ago.
I stopped there once and she hit me up with this sob story. She had a big old white Lincoln with an Arizona plate. She said it had broken down and it had taken all the money she had to fix it and she needed money for gas to get to her brothers in Santa Cruz.I gave her $20.About a year later I was at the same place.I came out of the restaurant and she was telling my friend the same story.I said that what you told me last year and I gave you $20,don't you remember. She acted as if she didn't know what I was talking about.I noticed a guy hanging out messing with stuff in the back of a truck. He was glaring at us.I think he was with her.
I hate scams, because cause people to not believe a person who really needs help.I would rather give the girl $20 and be had then to turn down a person with a real need. She had it all together, baby in arms.
In the case of the guy in Cali I don't think he was even hitting me up,just telling me this story of his paycheck he would get when he got home.Actually I think he intended to pay me but made a different choice later.

Didn't he say something about travelling to Cali in his last message?  So give the man a chance to get settled. It really doesn't seem to me like it's on him(Hilton) to prove anything.  Especially when nothing has been put forth to support any claims.

Happy,

I partially agree with you. However, flying from Bogota to Cali is only about 2 to 3 hours at the most. It probably would take most guys to settle in within a few hours to a day, depending on Spanish speaking ability.

Second, Hilton in his posts came off a little egotistical by talking about his wealth (he bragged a couple of times), his business, his dad who's an MD, the property he has near Joplin, etc. etc. etc..

It's great that he has these things, but there's no need to mention them all the time.

Third, Hilton told everyone that he was beginning to learn Spanish. Therefore, I assume up until the time he "left for Colombia" he spoke basic Spanish.

Now given that, I highly doubt that any reasonable person would travel to Colombia, given the current events, FOR 5 MONTHS. And, the idea of having 8 different Spanish teachers, sounds pretty far fetched.

Now, I am given him the benefit of the doubt. He may be there, but I am suspicious. If he's there I wish him success.

Either way, it doesn't really matter, because I'll be going down pretty soon, and all the other guys can forget it, because I'll have ALLLLLLL THE MAMACITAS !!!!!!!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take Care,
Aaron
