How do Brazilian women regard family and having children? I've read a lot about their sensuality and such, but I haven't heard much about their willingness/attitude to having children and/or what kind of mothers they might make.. I know it seems stupid to ask as I guess most women desire children, but with women from Colombia, it seem more obvious regarding the women and children and such.

I am no authority...

But unless you get a woman from Sao Paulo, you can expect to find her as devoted to the idea of being a mother as most other Latin American countries...

I am told -- by a woman from Sao Paulo -- that the women there generally put a career ahead of homelife -- just like women in America.

My brief experience with meeting some professional women is that they do work about 60 hours a week, and it is more or less expected. So, I would say that the stereo-type is, to some degree, true in Sao Paulo... at least among the professinal women...

Clearly Aids is always worse in big cities, like Sao Paulo.

Also, the Brazilians responded quickly to the threat. Protected sex is more common in Brazil now (statistically) than in the USA.

There is an online Brazilain magazine... I think it's called: The Brazilianist. (www.brazilianist.com) that has all kinds of articles. I think that's where I read it.

Recife is a good place to go according to my "expert."

Of course... this is all stereotype stuff...

But according to her, the northern parts of Brazil are where Europeans go to find a wife, and the women are happy to find a foreigner.

Also (according to my "expert") the reason for this is that the families there are large and poor, so the woman is looking for a man who will marry her, and send money home to her family every month.

This actually doesn't bother me, personally. Especially when you consider what $100 a month would mean to a whole family. I would have no problem with that at all.

She was surprised that I felt that way. And she told me that if I did that, her family would be so delighted with her new husband that the woman would feel great pressure to never leave him, so the possibility of her being a green card scammer was virtually nil.

Again... as with all of these stereotypes, youneed to take it with a grain of salt...

Still... it was an interesting tidbit of information...

Cool thanks for the site.. Yeah I was actually surprised that this lady didn't mind moving to the USA.  I hear most Brazilians don't care to leave Brazil. I have a good friend in my doctoral program that is from Portugual and he told me the same thing about the women not wanting to leave. So I consider myself luck to have met one that wishes to be here.

I'm not sure if this girl is poor, but I don't think she is rich either. The sending of 100 dollars isn't bad nor is the idea of helping her family. Heck I am busting my but in this doctoral progam so I can help my mom when she retires. I was just so fed up with a lot of the women I met here that didn't think that this was a good idea(me helping my mom, can you imagine?).. I plan to help my mother and my future wifes family too, no matter if she is American or foreign. Heck that is what family is about.

I need to get going on this Visa and stuff.  I understand I can pay a little more dinero($50) and get one pretty quick as long as I have my airline ticket.  The only thing is there are noooooo cheap flights to Recife.  I was thinking of trying a travel/tour agency to maybe get a special on a airfare and hotel.

Thanks for your input!!!

A few other sites may be of interest to you:

One is actually for the Rio area, but has some general Brazil information:

http://www.ipanema.com/

To help you brush up on your Portuguese, this one is good:

http://www.limiar.org/portuguese/

(BTW, personally, I found Portuguese to be a very beautiful language...)

And, another VERY strange site -- for in case you want to be able to cuss like a native:

http://www.englishpeculiarities.hpg.ig.com.br/palavroes.htm

Have fun!

OK... I have some interesting information on this...

I CANNOT verify it... but it IS interesting...

My company has a lot of people who travel down to Brazil all of the time.

We have some problem, apparently dealing with California's consulate... dunno why...

I went through Amex travel, and they got it for me through Houston. and it cost me $150 because they had to expedite it (I got it in 7 days).

It is a standard 90 Visa.

OK...here's what's INTERESTING...

I was told by someone in my company that one of our colleagues went through Miami. And she did NOT have a visa. So, she hopped off the flight in Miami, drove over to the consulate. And got a 10 YEAR visa in about 30 minutes. I think she paid something like $15...

I don't know that I would have the nerve to do that.. but the guy swore that was the way to go. Just drive to the consulte and ask for one. There is no red tape, and they are happy to oblige...

FWIW

As far as cheap flights... you can fly to Sao Paulo or Rio, and then get an inter-connecting flight. I think you are actually better off just doing that when you get to Brazil, from what I was told. Or... if you are the adverturesome type... there is always the bus...
