Does anyone know what happens in those cases where the income does exceed the minimums but either you are paid cash or you are self employed and under reporting?

About the paid in cash and under reporting your income, don't expect any help out of one branch of the government if you tell them you are defrauding another branch of the government.Actually the story doesn't work any better with mortgage companies either. They take the net income from your last 2 years tax returns and divide it by 24 and that is your monthly salary for qualifying for a home loan.It takes alot more money to buy a house than sponsor an immigrant and as a realtor I have seen this story many times.
The other issue with the money needed to sponsor an immigrant, some people sponsor several, and the income gets divided by persons sponsored,so even a good salary could not be enough.
As to how  much net worth they will accept in liew of income I don't know.Someone mentined a co sponsor and that may be the way.Actually its hard to believe that anybody who can afford what this really costs can't show the income.
You will need several times the minimum income to live reasonably well here.

You would need a co-sponsor to fill out another affidavit of support.  Without that it just aint goin to happen unless you can show alot of assets and income that relates to them.  That is a far more complicated way to go.

Could this be done by an employer?   The affidavit(sp) just states you do have a particular amount of income right?

No.  The affidavit of support states that you will support the lady for 10 years divorce or no divorce.  It says you will reimburse the Govt. if she collects any "means tested" support. (Wellfare food stamps etc.)  (The Govt. has never collected this before from a man.) I'm no lawyer or accountant so I am out of my area of expertise.  Go to the INS website and read the documents for yourself.  I do believe a letter from an employer confirming your current income might help.  I had a friend use this method with his new Russian Wife.

Good luck

My wife and I filed her adjustment of status application recently and I had to file another affadavid of support with it.  The amount you have to make is around $14.5K/year (based on 2000 guideline, I do not believe they have released the figures for 2001 yet) and you have to furnish your tax returns for the past 3 filing years with the affadavid.

If you go to Apex Visa Service, on the links page they list the new requirements to sponsor someone for a visa.  If you do not meet the guidelines yourself you can get another person to sponsor.  It seems basically just to ensure you live above the poverty level.  I have not gone through this myself, but I *think* anyone with a fiancee or spouse here in the states has.

Don't know. Lots of others on this board would have that info but I beleive you have to supply your income tax records going back some years and show proof you can be financialy resposible for her while she is here.
