I just spent about 2 hours writing to a lady in Spanish. It’s about 2 paragraphs long. Man! It’s not easy to get it right. I use Babel Fish. I tell you, if I didn’t know how to speak French, the results would be really weird. French is somewhat like Spanish, so I can figure it out OK. (I hope!).

I can see how people could get the wrong message really fast. An example of this would go like this: What you mean to say is, “Just like you, I would like to find that special someone to marry one day” and it comes out “I would like to find someone special just like you to marry one day”. You could basically be proposing in the first letter and not even know it. I don’t want to make that mistake!

I asked her to be patient with my Spanish. She says that she will have all the patience in the world (she’ll need it).  What I do is write in English and Spanish. That way she has both to read.
I’m writing to 2 ladies right now. I’ll write to more later, then get off my butt and go visit some of them. I don’t think the “tours” are for me. People are more “real” one on one. My 2 cents worth………..Canadian

Either of the above links will do a much better job than BabelFish.

Practice makes perfect! I agree with your decision to include both an English and Spanish version of the letter. When I was doing letter writing, I would hand write the letters. I don't know if it makes a big difference to the lady, but it just seems to me like it would be more personal that way than just sending a printout of a typewritten letter. That is, unless your penmanship is horrible...

Just like you, I started writing poorly in Spanish, but
over time and with patience I greatly improved. I now
actually write quite well in Spanish. It's just like getting
in shape, hard at first but easier over time. Hang in
there!
