WOW! Columbians falling right into your lap!
Well, I would like to go to Columbia because the women there are gorgeous and itchin to get out, but I wouldn't take the chance traveling there now. I have recently been checkin out the girls at brazilgirls.com and i think they are more beautiful than
Columbians and  and Ukrainians Combined, (IMO) but it is very expensive to travel there for me and I'm really just due for a vacation ,and am not "loaded" (I'm a chef) so I'm probably going to Dom. Republic.
I have a friend who lives there. Air is $238 /rt from Newark so I think I will do that or an all inclusive for 7 nights in Puerto Plata at the Jack Tar Village resort . (Over 18 only, no children) for $708... Can't beat that!
Either way, my wife is in Brasil and I will find her within the next 2 years!!!!

Seconding Mark here, have you checked out prices to Brazil? Airfares are not that bad-- I´m going there for a little over $500: Valencia-Madrid-São Paulo-Curitiba. Others have mentioned cheaper fares than that going from the U.S.

If you´re sold on Brazil, get the Lonely Planet Brazilian phrasebook, pick a destination, and go down and find some "talking dictionaries" to practice with! And yes, you can beat $708, by staying in pensionatos for $20 a night and getting your fun and entertainment by going out and meeting people.

And forget LatinEuro/BrazilGirls. Or at least be aware of the problems people have had with them.

Go south, young man, way south!

A pensionato is like a B&B, more or less. I´ve got a Brazilian friend nearby and she recommended I stay at one while looking for an apartment because of the great value. That may or may not be what you want while you are on vacation. A great place to ask about lodging in Brazil, once you know where in Brazil you´re going, is the South America branch of the Thorn Tree bulletin board at www.lonelyplanet.com.

You can order the Brazilian phrasebook from the Lonely Planet site, but I got mine from Amazon. The phrasebook is a great way to start and to be able to fumble your way around Brazil. Last night I spent some time over at my friend´s house working on pronunciation with her and her niece, and if you can find a local brasiliero/a to coach you on pronunciation before you go, that would be a big help.

If you want to start really learning the language, here are the other books I recently bought to get started, and you can look up the customer reviews on Amazon:

501 Portuguese Verbs, by John J. Nitti and Michael J. Ferreira
Essential Portuguese Grammar, by Alexander da R. Prista
Random House Portuguese Dictionary : Portuguese-English English-Portuguese, by Bobby J. Chamberlain

I´ve recommended this book many times, too: How to Learn Any Language, by Barry Farber. Read this one first, and you´ll be on your way. And if you ever get discouraged, just check out the LatinEuro site, LOL.

... in response to what kind of problems with brazilgirls??..., posted by deatchef on Feb 22, 2002

Brazilgirls and LatinEuro are the same enterprise. To read about problems with them, click on archive #78 above, and see the thread "Brazil vs. Colombia Women" started by David W on 2/10, and the two-message thread I started on 2/3 titled "Hmmm...strange." I´m not saying don´t use them at all, but do be aware of these issues.

I would love to forget them...

But, what is the choice?

Hanging around shopping malls and trying to pcik omeone up with falty portuguese and a phrasebook seems awfully risky to me.

You are going to Brazil? Where? How did you find the women you are meeting?

I am open to suggestions... I just haven't heard of anyone who has had much success...

Yeah, you have a point that a week isn´t long enough for that kind of approach. But at any rate, if deatchef is sold on Brazil he should visit on vacation and scout it out a little at least.

I´m going to be living there for a while and studying Portuguese. Maybe I should start a local agency while I´m there, since there is such a need. Since I post as Bueller here, I can be the "Big B" of Planet Love: "Come on, you knuckleheads, forget Colombia and come to Brazil, where the women are Amazons and they´ll turn you every which way blah blah blah..." :-)

Seriously, the thought has crossed my mind, but I don´t think running an agency is really my thing. But maybe I could do something just for the PL and LWL guys who are interested in Brazil but are holding back because of the lack of help. A Geocities site like Sylvia Oliver had, perhaps, and dealing with women from SP southward so a guy could focus on one region of the country. Any thoughts on that?

I was kidding about calling myself Big B. The owner of fire&passion posts on LWL under that name. If you´ve read his posts, he´s really "out there" and kind of obnoxious, and that was the joke. :-)
Well, Mark has given me some interesting ideas to chew over.

I don't recall anyone posting on this board who is married to a Brazilian or even betrothed to one but maybe I missed his posts.

I met my fiancee through LatinEuro.

For me, I liked the correspondence approach, because I think you can determine if there is a genuine friendship between you before you meet.  I'm happy with the results but I can also see how a lot of things have to happen right along the way for people to succeed, no matter what approach they use.

I'm sure there are others, maybe they just don't follow this board.
