I'm going to rio. Can you tell me what areas in my search are close enough for a woman to come see me or for me to easily travel to see her? ( 2 hour bus ride). Thanks in advance..

Another good site is:

http://www.ipanema.com/

Has a lot of info about Rio...

Written by a local. And, FWIW, as much as he loves Rio, even HE will tell you it's not safe...

on my first trip to sao paulo, a nice woman from LE took a 5 hour bus ride to spend her birthday with me, when she left i gave her the money for her ticket - 50 reals (about $21)

i was rio for carnival, and some women said they wanted to come and see me, but none of them had any money, or said they didnt. Seeing that it was carnival time i wasnt willing to finace someone elses trip, so i told them we'd have to continue talking then maybe i could see them on my next trip

my suggestion is that since you probably dont know brazil and the bus system all that well to tell the women to come to see you. from the city of rio you are a 5 hour or less busride from cities within the states of rio, minas Gerais, espirito santo and 6 hours from sao paulo

ask them how much the busride is, and if you think they are worth it then reimburse them the bus fare when they arrive, or pay half or whatever you work out

if yyou have a large enough place you can offer them the couch for a day or two

warning
the rio bus station is in a seedy part of town
i'd suggest you have her take a cab from there and not go there yourself

good luck
make sure you eat at both Marius restuarants, one seafood, one beef, on atlantico avenue in Leme
they will also convert you dollars to real at a much higher than the official rate

and at the esplanade grill in impanema

You suggest to avoid a trip to the "seedy" bus station in Rio.  You suggest having your girl take a taxi.  It is Ok for you girl to pass through the bus station while you wait in your hotel room.

I hope most of us Americans have a little more courage and character and would build up the fortitude to enter the Rio bus station.  With an attitude like that the pioneers never would have conquered the west and Normandy beach would be in the hands of the Germans.

Kind Regards,

Colonial

I confess that I wondered about that, myself.

Assuming the best...

Perhaps he meant that it would be dangerous for a foreigner to go there, but that a "native" Brazilian would have no difficulty?

I don't know... I've never been to the bus station in Rio...

If she's worth it I'd take a swing at a pitboy for her, so the bus station should be no sweat..
Go to Ipanema dot com to learn about these field mines that kiss their male friends on the mouth, but are anything but panzies...

I'd recommend that you listen to a local about what is or isn't a good idea for a foreign visitor to do.  This kind of thing changes as the police address problem areas and new ones crop up.  If you don't listen to her now, what will happen if you marry her?!

As far as the money and who pays for what, I think this is a touchy subject.  Someone spending R$50($20US) to travel to see you may not be a big deal to them, but then again minimum monthly salary(like our minimum wage) is R$210(I think, I didn't check in the paper recently and I'm giving this number from memory).  BUT on the other hand, it might hurt someone's pride if you insist too much.  I hope you will have the opportunity to find your own balance on this.

I would not send money to someone you have never met.  When you are with someone offer to pay for meals, bus, admission to various events and places, items one of you will use in your travels(phone cards, sunscreen).  For me personally, I'd draw the line at buying things like jewlery, clothing, apartments, cars, home appliances for someone that you are just getting to know.

Maybe it's all of the indoctrination I got when travelling to Russia...

But never send money.

However, you can tell her that you'll pay her bus ticket when you see her.

This also brings up the question: If someone busses in for five hours to meet you... how much time should you spend with her? Is it fair to have a 30 minute "meeting" with her, then shake her hand and tell her no thanks?

I think you need to really consider that.

Still... I would think that if it was someone who I was interested in enough to have her bus in... I'd think about going there.

You'll never find out more about her unless you see her in her home town.

Besides... are you actually saying that in all of Rio, you can't find enough women to fill a week?
