Watching Sabado Gigante. Don Fatso is doing the interview people in the audiance bit. Right now he's interviewing a married couple "how did you meet?" stuff like that. The interesting twist? The man is from Honduras, about 30yo. The woman is from United States and is aprox 25yo, a drop dead #10 blonde who knows about 5 words total of Spanish....(man says he can speak English)...I wasn't paying attention at first, missed how they met, but they've been together 3 years now.

Myth:

Latin women cannot find any good latin men. They all cheat, act all macho, and treat the women like dirt.

Dose of Reality:

If a gorgeous AW is getting a spouse from the LA countries, what does that tell you?

Guess there are good men there after all. And if he is surrounded by gorgeous Latinas that the men here are going gaga over... why is he coming to America for a woman?

There are only three reasons for this that I can see:

ONE) This is merely an exception, and the myth of the lousy LM holds true

TWO) You always want what you can't have

THREE) As someone said earlier: It's the economy, stupid.

The great equalizer, the economic benefits for Latinas are equally beneficial for Latinos...

Latin men are in general are no worse or no better than Latin women.  They come from the same families, little Pablito who becomes a womanizer was raised by a women, his mother.  She will be the biggest influence on his life. When Pablito becomes Pablo, gets married, has children, he will continue the womanizing that he has learned from his friends, his father and the culture at large.  Latin women should not be given a free ride in all of this as it always takes two to tango.  I have met Calenas in the agencies who have affairs with married men.  It happens all the time.

Latin culture is just very machisimo.  If you or I lived in Colombia for very long, I suspect we would become very much like the dreaded Colombian male.  The converse is true, a latino may act very different here in the United States.  My friend Ivan is from Bogota but works in San Francisco.  He's not a womanizer here but I have a sneaking suspicion he's one in Colombia. (-:

I personally think all else being equal, a latin woman prefers a latin man.  A latin man in the United States behaves quite differently than in his native land.  I notice that here in California, latinas are generally with latinos.

You're are right, it is the economy, stupid.

The rules in the US are different than in LA, here a woman has tons of rights/laws protecting her.

A man can cheat here but if he gets a woman pregnant he could be forced to pay child support, not so in LA, here if a man gets married then gets divorced the law favors the wife, she can take the man for almost everything he has.

Actually most of the single mothers I've talked with personally in Cali say they get assistence from the father. I don't know the law but it seems that if they can find him they can make him pay and this without having ever been oficialy married. What I know for sure however is that after two years in a "union libre" or commonlaw marriage it becomes legal and if you separate after that she gets half of everything aquired during the union. This "union" is so strong legaly that a friend of mine got his resident visa by getting a notery to sign a paper stating that he and his girlfriend had already been living together for two years. I also know from another friend's experience that if you marry in Colombia and later need a divorce do it in Colombia. Again, the ex will be entitled only to half of what's aquired in the marriage.

True there are different laws but the laws in some respect reflect our different cultural norms and taboos.  A latino in the United States changes his behavior because of these norms.  Conversely a gringo who moves to Latin America will find that his thinking may change with time.  He will be tempted to behave in Colombia in a manner similar to the other males he encounters.
