Best language translators on the web??

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what you all thought which web sites have the best translation from English to Spanish and vice versa.  I am using Bablefish at world.altavista.com

It's OK but I'm hoping there are better ones.  Thanks

You need a Microsoft Passport but it does the best job of translating and especially keeping your paragraph formatting that I have found and it is free.

This one does a lot better. Not "human", but much better. I played with it a while and managed to trip it up, but had to try harder. I was favorably impressed. Still, not as good as learning for yourself.  Ha ha, "still" was the word that got it, it used it the way I did in the previous sentence, when in fact I was writting about a place that makes whiskey (which a human of course would have realized and done correctly). But all in all, this is the best one I've seen so far.

Give these two translations websites a try.  I beleive they provide a
more accurate translation compared to Bablefish at world.altavista.com.  
InterTran offers a wide variety of language translations.  For example,
it has Filipino(Tagalog), Russian, LA Spanish, European Spanish,
Portuguese as well as Brazilian Portuguese(for those interested in
writing to Brazilian females).  They just added the Russian language a
few months ago.  Its services is about as accurate as Bablefish.  

For the best translation of Spanish/English and vise versa I found PROMT
to be the best.  I made that determination by translating a letter from
english/spanish and then back again.  It maintained to closest match to
original than any other translator I have used.  One other thing, what
ever you plan on translating stick to using simple and gramatically
correct English(no slangs).  The software will have an easy time
translating the text.

I hope this helps.  Give them a try an tell me what you think.

I just tried the tranexp. It was pretty bad, a 4th grader with a dictionary could do better. Example: Tengo mucho miedo = Tengo lots of fear.

Doesn't do you much good if you don't already know the word "Tengo" does it?  (for those who don't know any Spanish, the litteral translation is "I have much fear", the smooth translation is "I am very afraid".

This site allows you to use bablefish along with others translators from same screen.  believe it not, Babel is actually pretty good.

You might try using simple sentences in English. This helps a great deal when going from Spanish to English.  However what you find when going the opposite direction is, if the lady mis spells a word in spanish or if she uses complicated long sentences, the translation gets screw up and you can't figure out what the heck she is saying. ha ha..

Long complicated sentences and errors that is.  There's no substitute for studying Spanish.  The second best alternative is a human translator, followed by an electronic translation program that can operate in interactive mode (used by someone who knows a little Spanish), with fully automatic translations coming in at last place.

Anyone interested in this should make every effort possible to study the language.

Yep,

Lots of run-on sentences and mis-spelled words. Knowledge of spanish definitely helps in the case of mis-spellings, where the translations cannot...in determining what it is that the person was likely intending to say versus what was actually written.
