Howdy fellas,
I don't write much anymore because of a lot of crap that is thrown around on these boards. But, with what is happening back home, I figure I would give you what was going on down here when airplanes fly into buildings in New York and Washington. First, being a former Infantry Marine and Soldier, I cannot get a flight from Bogota to Saudi Arabia. I was told flights from Cali to Bogota have been cancelled as well. But, I cannot confirm that. It appears to be business as usual here. Last night, I did walk down to the market and passed a few homes and the News Coverage was on every channel. I mostly watched CNN International but occasionally switched to BBC and Telemundo. Those stations were the first to show the celebrations in Lebanon (Ex-Country along with Afgahnistan)and people jumping out of the windows of the World Trade Centers. El Pais scurried to get a special afternoon edition out.
Of course, as of right now, everyone here is stranded from going back to the US. My friend will be going to American Airlines tomorrow to see what they have to say. He is suppose to leave on Sunday, but he is considering leaving next Thursday because even if he does get back to the US, he will have to face huge backlog of flights by people stranded on the domestic front.
I do not know if the Embassy is open or not. I believe that it is, but I do not think that the VISA section is open. I the reports on CNN are any indication. Being fomer Marine Security Forces, myself the Marines in charge of the Security of the Embassy will step up precautions because of the attack in the US. Part of the precautions are limiting non essential activities. VISA Dept, is classified Non essential. For example, when I was staioned in Hawaii during "Just Cause" we locked down the Base I was stationed at. So, it would stand to reason it would be the same for any Embassy in a Country with the potential of trouble.
Well, that's all I know for now. But, as far as I know, no Americans are having any problems over this.
Talk to you guys later,
Keith
