Here is some follow up info on the Cali hostal mentioned earlier by John O. It's located at Calle 3 #27-87. Tel:5564818/4820/4821. This is a little less than halfway between Ciudad Jardin and Av Sexta area ( closer to sexta). According to the pamphlet sent to me by Rigo Tafur, I suppose a maneger, they have rooms for $20US and apartments for $35US. These include phone, bath, hot water etc. also internet cafe. Sounds good and I'll probobly try it out when I go next month. One question for John O if you're reading, what's their policy on a girl visiting you in your room?

... in response to Hostal San Fernando, posted by Cali vet on Aug 26, 2001

Hello Cali vet - I asked my girlfriend if she knew of this Hostal and she replied:

Yo conozco este hotel, es en el barrio San Fernando
pero no me gusta por que es una casa vieja con algunas
habitaciones y son un poco oscuras, yo pienso que este
hotel le sirve a una persona que solo quiera dormir,
esta mas o menos a 40 minutos de la avenida
sexta(norte) y 45 minutos del cuidad jardin (sur) el
barrio San Fernando es comenzando el sur.

The price sounds good though and she is kind of picky about Hotels.

Thanks Edge for getting the report from your girlfriend. I might go ahead and try it. I've only got three nights in Cali before heading for the Pacific coast. If she didn't like the San Fernando she better not even go near Dave's Hostel Calidad near sexta where private rooms are $6 and dorm is $4.50 which is another of my options.

She likes to keep on top the hotel scene in Cali.  We have stayed at many of them and when I am there, we have spent some time looking at various hotels.  Creo que ella no quisiera ir a Dave's Hostel Calidad.

1)  Hotel Intercontinental - probably everyone who has been to Cali is familiar with this hotel.  I recall a room runs around $90/night con desayuno and it is a 5 star hotel.  I enjoyed it but who would not since it is a 5 star.  It is a larger hotel so if this is not someone's cup of tea, there are others.

2)  Hotel Torre Cali - kind of as the name indicates.  It is a tower.  I think the tallest building in Cali.  Not all of the rooms are the hotel.  Certain floors are apartments.  A nice restaurant on top of the building.  I actually liked the room we had.  It was large with a walkin closest, big beds, big bathroom.  I think we were on the 44th floor or so.  The girlfriend did not like how high we were.  I believe we paid around $45/night con desayuno.

3)  Hotel Wilson - This hotel is near avenida sexta and we stayed there one trip.  It is on the smaller side and the rooms are small.  To tell you the truth, I did not really like the rooms.  But is close to 6th avenue and it also has a decent restaurant.  I believe we paid around $45.

We then started to stay at Suites type hotels because they have a kitchen included and are around the same cost as a hotel room.

1) Suites House - this is a large house as you start to go up in the hills. Nice neighborhood.  Very nice rooms.  You can even get apartment type rooms.  We paid around $60 with breakfast and lunch.  Very nice quiet, classy place.

2)  Suites Cora - this was a step down from Suites house, about $35 sin desayuno, but pretty decent.  Good sized room with balcony and nice kitchen.  Small bathrooms and the bed was not that big.  But the price is pretty good.  This is located on a street kind of close to a disco (maybe a block away) so it was not all that quiet around el fin de semana.  Hot water does not last long.

3)  Suites Travelers - this is the best place that I found for the money.  It is near Suites House so it is in a nice neighborhood of brick buildings.  A great room starting at $45 con desayuno.  Very modern with nice furniture. Hot water.  Very quiet room.  Safe in the room.  good place to stay.

We went looking at several other hotels too numerous to remember.  I do remember I believe it is the Hotel Pension - an older hotel on nice grounds.  The girlfriend thought she would be afraid to stay there because it might have ghosts and she was serious -:).

It appears there probably is not a good economical hotel close to Unicentro y Cuidad Jardin.  Of course we know about Pacifico Royal, great hotel, 5 star, but hey, $70 for the weekends, what a deal.

If you have not eaten yet at Simon Parrilla, give it a try, barbeque type food, a mi me gusta.

We actually checked out Hotel Metropolis.  you kind of cannot miss it now.  It seemed o.k. because they have sound proof glass so it cuts down on the noise becaue it is right on a corner of a major intersection. The pool area on the top is nice.  I probably would not be crazy about staying there.

This San Fernanco Real I am not familiar with, might be o.k. at $40 but it is stil 30 minutes from Unicentro.  But it has a disco los fines de semana tambien.

Oh well, maybe something will turn up down the road.  Take care.

Hello Baby!

llama San fernando Real, aire acondionado, tv cable,
agua caliente, piscina, turco, con desayuno y
discoteca los fines de semana hay discoteca hasta las
2:00 a.m. y el costo es 40 dolares, es mas o menos 30
minutos en taxi hasta Unicentro.
Bye,
Your Angel.

Thanks again Edge for the info. It seems to be as I thought: no economical hotels in the south. Simon Parilla is one of my favorites for sure but Rancho de Jonas has seen better days. I also like the Peruvian restaurant next to Diego's spagetti place in Ciudad Jardin.

We usually stayed in north Cali so I do not know of one.  I will ask the girlfriend though.  She may know of one to check out.  Will advise.
