I just got off the phone with my friend in Cartagena. I used the Freedom Call Worldwide Prepaid Phone Card. I had to call her at least half a dozen times because the connections would break up after 5 to 7 minutes.

I will never use them again.

I checked into the 10106868 number. It's not available in my area.

Anybody got any more ideas?

Been there, done that.  Here's the best of all:
GFI communications, Inc.
www.gfi-inc.com
It's a small company that gives you an 800 number for use, and if programmed, it will recognize your home and cell phones and not require codes.  I call Bogota for 18 cents per minute from home, from the car on my cell phone, or from ANY phone using the calling cards that come as part of the package.  Great service and small price.  It's nice to utilize the drive time to its highest and best use!

i'm using cards by IDT distributed by union telecard allaince. they have a website but only offer 2 cards on the website, (www.uniontelecard.com)one is the colombianita, i've never used this one so i don't know how good it is. anyway, i use ny exclusive, ny allaince and nj easytalk, all give me approx 1hr 10min for $5 to cartagena. their  number is 888.708.6466 call to see if they have cards for your area. btw, the connection was great and no dropped calls.

Is that a typo..10106868..?

I use 10-16-868...with good quality and good price...about .19c a minute..

Like others have mentioned..at times no method works to get thru..rain, holidays, some periods at night. In those cases one just has to wait it out and keep trying.

yes, i used the world wide card until i had the same problems calling cartagena. since then i've switched to two others that are excellent and give me slightly longer talk times, the only drawback is that they're specifically for my local calling area, that is NY/NJ. one is called NY Alliance and the other NJ Easy Talk. NJ easy Talk gives me 1 hr 15min for $5. NY Alliance 1hr.5min for $5. The company that runs both cards is IDT, so maybe you can contact them. i don't have any handy to give you a customer service number, but i'll check tomorrow.

If you are in Texas, use the "Texas No Connect" brand card, ten cents a minute, no connection fee, no minimum, no tricks, good luck getting through 95% of the time, good connections 99% of the time. You will find it for sale in small cafe's and stores over in the Mexican part of town...If you're not in Texas, then I don't know what to tell you. Oh wait, see if you can find a "Hello, Colombia" brand card....they are also ten cents a minute, no connection fee etc. and I'd give them an 80% on getting through and a 95% on connection quality when you do get through.

Sometimes it's not the phone card's fault...there are times when I can't get through using ANY card or 10-10 or even dialing direct...usually when it is raining down there.

Well, like I said, small stores and cafes in the Mexican part of town. Try La Michoacana, I know they have them for sure. There's one in the shopping center at Josey & Beltline in Carrollton (N.E. corner), there's another one just east of downtown Dallas, at Columbia & Peak, right next door to Bogota Apartments, ha ha----(go east on Main out of downtown, when it crosses Peak it changes it's name to Columbia) I think there are several more of them and lots of other stores and resturants stock this card also.

p.s. I KNOW how to spell Colombia, but I spelled it the way the city street sign has it spelled.

One word of caution for those wanting to use Acculinq to call B/quilla. They advertise a rate of about .16 per minute for that city but give a city/country code of 5758. This code doesn't exist, only 575 the addition of 8 produces an error message. If you dial only 575 and your number they charge you the cross-Colombia rate of .30. I have argued with them about false advertising even having my credit card company contest and deduct the overcharge but they still keep this fake rate on their site. The codes ending in 0 are legitimate and produce the advertised rates. They add a $1 charge for any month in which their service is used. Its hard for us midwesterners to find those great rate calling cards.

I am with you.  Most of the phone cards that I have used to Colombia are junk.  The lines are always busy or nobody answers/ When you do get a connection it is hard to hear.

I also can not use 10-10 where I live.

I use acculinq.com   I have never had any problems with them at all.  The calls always go thru and there is no problem hearing.  16 cents a minute to Cali.

Plus there is a record on the internet so you can see all the records of your calls
