Hello El Diablo,

Can I ask you something about your post that I read. You said while in Cali "There were plenty of conservative Protestant women but few if any who were Catholics".

Can you please give me some more details about what you mean here? I have never visited Columbia but as I understand Columbia is mostly Catholic rather than protestant, are you aware that this is not the case anymore?

If anyone else knows about this, it would be good to learn more.

Thanks for any insight.
Canadian Guy.

Canadian Guy,

I'm going to avoid answering your question with words that may be misunderstood.  I think the words conservative and liberal have been misused so much in society that they carry very different meanings to different people.  My definition was the most simplistic that is commonly used and had meaning ONLY in terms of change, a conservative not desiring change but a liberal advocating it. But it's actually much more complicated than this.  For example, conservatism can not only be thought of in terms of change but also in terms of a philosophy or a tradition.  You could look at any given situation from a myriad of angles and perspectives and what is deemed conservative or liberal might very well change.  So perhaps it is best not to use the term but rather write in clear language.  So as to your question....

The population in Colombia is predominately Catholic, however there is a growing Protestant presence there. Many Catholics in Colombia and particularly those of the new generation are not educated in their Faith nor do they practice it. The Protestant community on the other hand is smaller but much more fervent. The Protestant movement in Colombia is pre-dominately evangelical or fundamentalist.  You will find very few main line protestant denominations like Lutherans or Anglicans/Episcapalians however as these denominations are less likely to send missionaries into Catholic communities.  Among non-Christian or quasi-Christian groups, Mormons and JWs are having good success and you can find large and growing communities of them throughout Colombia.

Hi El Diablo,

Thanks for the info about Protestant Christians and Roman Catholics in Columbia.

I did not read any post about "liberals" or "conservatives" though, that must have been from a different post than the one I read.
